Local teams come up short in state golf tournaments

AUGUSTA -- Both Eastside golf squads and the Heritage boys team played in the state tournaments, but the results were not as good as they wanted.

The Heritage boys had the best finish of the three teams, coming in 13th out of 16 teams followed by Eastside boys (14-of-16) and Eastside girls (15-of-16).

"We shot consistently what we've been shooting. But the other teams just seemed to shoot better," said Eastside girls coach Jason Grooms. "There were a lot of good teams overall."

Heritage's Hunter Elliott had the best finish over all local players shooting a 72 at Jones Creek Golf Club. As a team, the Patriots boys shot a 337. Joining Elliott with scoring rounds were Aaron Kennedy (85), Trent Winter (86) and Reed Lewis.

Marist won the state championship with a team score of 300 followed by Lakeside, Evans with a 301. Habersham Central's Lee McCoy was the low medalist with a 68.

Eastside's Quinn Murphy rallied to shoot a 77 to tie for 15th overall as an individual. He shot a 40 in the front nine followed by a 1-over par, 37, in the back nine.

"He battled all day," said Eastside boys coach Jay Cawthon. "He started out triple then with a bogey. He's four-over after two holes so that's a heck of a job by him."

Also scoring for Eastside were Brandon Shives (83), Jordan Liefels (91) and Matt Mitchell (96).

The Eastside boys had a disappointing day shooting a 347 after shooting a 306 last year to finish third. Gainesville won the Class AAA championship with a team score of 295 with Richmond Academy one stroke back for a runner-up position.

The low medalist was Gainesville's Paul Brown with a 4-under par 68.

"We're a much younger team. Four of the guys are playing in their first state tournament so the nerves got them," said Cawthon. "Plus the greens are mighty tough."

In the Class AAA girls tournament at Applewood Golf Club, Emily Almand was Eastside's low scorer with a 98 with Savannah Upshaw shooting the other scoring round of 115.

Low medalist was Dalton's Brendie Rockholt with a 78. Taking state with a team score of 166 was Gainesville, followed by Carrollton who had a 174 for runner-up. Eastside shot a team score of 213.
