Lady Eagles head to Columbus for second round

COVINGTON -- The Lady Eagles soccer team made the most of their opportunity to host a playoff game by beating Westside, Augusta 3-0 in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs at Cousins Middle School on Friday.

Eastside (12-6-1) outshot the Lady Patriots (13-4) by 12 shots (17-5) in the first half. The Lady Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead when Amber Lafond scored on a header off a well-placed Kari Dylong corner kick less than a 90 seconds into the match. Multiple missed scoring opportunities by the Lady Eagles' offense kept Westside in the match at the half, trailing only 1-0.

The second half saw the Lady Eagles score quickly again, taking a 2-0 lead 2:30 in when Sarah Gaddis scored off a pass from Lafond. Emily House assisted Lafond on her second goal with 29:02 left to push the lead to 3-0.

Once again, the Lady Eagles defense was up to the task, rejecting the Lady Patriots attackers before they could develop any real scoring chances.

The shutout was Eastside's eighth in its last 12 games. Credited with eight saves in the match was keeper Carly Farrow who made her best save with 11:23 left to hold the shutout.

With the win, Eastside ties a school record with 12 wins in a season. It also has another first as it advances to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in the 16-year-old Lady Eagles program. For the second round on Wednesday, Eastside, 10-1-1 in its last 12 games, next visits Class AAA Columbus, which was a 2-1 winner over No. 9 ranked Riverwood on Friday.
