Social Circle hosts community-wide yard sale Saturday

SOCIAL CIRCLE --Gen. Sherman burned a trail through Georgia during his infamous March to the Sea, but bargain hunters can blaze a trail of good shopping this weekend during the Sherman's Trail Yard Sale in Social Circle.

Beginning at 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, yard sales will spring up in towns across the state, such as Waynesboro, Sardis, Sandersville and Eatonton in the east, and Monticello, Locust Grove, Hampton and Social Circle in the west.

Mike Miller, director of Social Circle's Better Hometown, said Social Circle has hosted a communitywide yard sale for a number of years, but this is the second year the Better Hometown has joined forces with Sherman's Trail Yard Sale.

"Sherman's Trail Yard Sale has put together a trail that follows the eastern flank and western flank of Sherman's March to the Sea," Miller said. "So where this was just a communitywide yard sale, it now extends really from near Savannah to near Conyers."

Miller said more than 20 families in Social Circle have signed up to participate, and nearly every neighborhood in the city will be represented.

He said the concept of the yard sale is organic because families who learn their neighbors will be participating can decide to join in and put things out for sale in their yards too.

"The neat thing is you don't have to have a permit for this sale and you don't have to worry about signage because people will follow the map and go to different neighborhoods and see all the sales," Miller said.

Maps to the sales in Social Circle will be available on Saturday morning at the Social Circle Welcome Center, Papa's Pizza and Buckeye's Restaurant.

"We don't have maps available online at this time because our goal is to get people downtown," Miller said.

In addition to the citywide yard sale, First Baptist Church of Social Circle will be hosting a yard sale this weekend where breakfast and lunch will be served to raise money for missions.

"This is just a great weekend and a very exciting event," Miller said.
