Eagles advance to second round with 4-1 win

AUGUSTA -- Eastside Trent Taylor may have received the glory but as was definitely a team effort that helped him score his four goals in the Eagles' 4-1 win over the Academy of Richmond County in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs on Thursday.

"We made some good adjustments at halftime. We opened it up and everything opened up a lot. He reaps the benefits of the good plays," said Eastside head coach Champ Young. "It was great to see."

The Eagles started the game with a spark but they were unable to start a fire. Fortunately, their defense was hitting on all cylinders keep the Musketeers from scoring as well in the first half.

The second half started with ARC's emotional leader, Joseph Ardrey, getting kicked out of the game. The Musketeers scored three minutes later with Telante Webber finding the back of the net as a result of an Eastside defensive breakdown.

"We're always going to have the little mental lapse and they made us pay for it like good teams do. But we responded well," said Young.

Eastside did not stay down for long as they made the adjustments the coached talked about resulting in Taylor tying the game with 25:32 when ARC keeper Korey Alsbrooks misplayed a Jake Sheldon shot.

"I think more than anything we finally calmed down. We were wound so tight in the first half that everything we tried to do was wrong," said Young. "It finally started clicking like we had done all week in practice."

Taylor put the Eagles on top for good with a header from a Jacob Alwes pass with 7:49 remaining in the contest. The Eagles put the game way two minutes later when Taylor's kick bounced off the post into the goal.

Not that Eastside needed it, but Taylor made it 4-1 with less than a minute to play with a lob over a charging Alsbrooks.

"It's a confidence builder," said Young. "We have so many young guys on the team. It's great to keep building their confidence. We play Tuesday and I hope to extend the confidence from here."

The Eagles play the winner of the Woodward Academy/Central game.
