Georgia State's softball team is set to begin its final regular season series today, and a freshman from Conyers has been one of the team's leaders.
As the Panthers (34-15, 11-6 Colonial Athletic Association) travel to Fairfax, Va., for a weekend series with George Mason beginning with Friday's doubleheader at noon, Callie Alford will try to cap a memorable regular season.
The freshman from Heritage has started all 49 games and is second on the team in batting average (.292, 40-for-137) and on-base percentage (.401). But it's Alford's run production that's been the most impressive. She's hit seven home runs, second to Lauren Coleman's nine, and added a team-high 11 doubles and 39 RBIs. In a recent series with James Madison, Alford went 4-for-9 with a home run, three doubles and 5 RBIs.
Another former Heritage standout, Whitney Phillips, heads into the final series with impressive numbers as well. The junior is hitting .281 (25-for-89) with a .360 on-base percentage and a team-high 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts.
After the weekend tilt with George Mason, the Panthers will play in the CAA Tournament on May 9-11.
