Newton County Special Olympics kicked off Monday with a special parade and opening ceremonies. Seniors Brooke Mize, left, from Newton High School and Kevin Middleton from Eastside High School carried the torch for the ending leg of the torch run just before lighting the caldron announcing the start of the 2012 Special Olympics. The torch is from the 1996 Olympics games that ran through Covington. Firefighter/EMT Terry Nabors looks on. The track and event events continue today, and closing ceremonies are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sharp field. - Staff Photo: Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith
