GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Georgia College and State University junior and former Eastside golfer Taylor Smith and freshman Ryan Trocchio of Norcross each shot a 1-over par 73 to give the Bobcats a second place finish at the 2012 Bearcat Golf Classic, hosted by Lander University, on Tuesday.
GCSU shot rounds of 288, 293 and 294 for 11-over on the par-72, 6,800-yard Greenwood Country Club.
Smith and Trocchio came into the day tied heading into the final round. Both golfers were 1-over par at 217. Trocchio went 73-71-73 while Smith carded rounds of 68-76-73. It was the fourth top-10 finish for Trocchio is seven tournaments while Smith has recorded a pair this season.
The low round for the Bobcats in final round action belonged to junior Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw) who posted an even-par 72. He finished one stroke behind the lead pair of Bobcats in 13th place. (73-73-72 -- 218).
Freshman David Sullivan (Woodstock) struggled with an 80 after carding rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday and took 37th at 11-over. Classmate Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) recorded a counting round today of 76 and finished 51st after the open-day rounds of 74 and 80.
No. 23 raked USC Aiken took the team title with an 8-under 856, putting three golfers in the top-10. The Bobcats were second among the tournament's 17 teams, bettering eight Peach Belt Conference (PBC) schools. The Bobcats were also above three top-25 teams in the most recent Golfstat Head-to-Head Rankings; No. 16 Georgia Southwestern State University, No. 17 Armstrong and No. 20 Carson-Newman College.
Flagler College's Joel Dahlenburg finished 7-under (66-67-76) as the individual medalist taking the field by three strokes. Belmont Abbey College's Adam Hedges and Newberry College's Jon Weiss tied for second.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Monday, April 9 in Pine Mountain for the 2012 PBC Championship at Callaway Gardens.
