Rockdale girls tennis beats rival Newton

COVINGTON -- The score between the Newton girls and the Rockdale girls tennis teams couldn't be considered close, but don't tell Rockdale head coach Stephen Sansing it was an easy match in the 4-1 win on Monday at Rockdale Tennis Center.

"I knew that they had some really good doubles teams and I knew that would give us some work," he said. "The games were much closer than the score appears, especially with the No. 2 doubles and even the No. 1 doubles. I like playing county rivals."

At No. 2 doubles, Newton's Tenia Morgan and Presley Trevino made Rockdale's Ciara Chesser and Alliyah Byrd work for their win. Morgan and Trevino fought hard, but the Rockdale team was able to win it 6-3, 6-0.

Rockdale's No. 1 doubles team of Libby and Abby Bradford kept Newton's Shundra Kelton and Allie Brazelton off balance with their 6-0, 6-1 win.

Newton's only win came at No. 3 singles with Marie Diaz beating Brooke Tryon 6-1, 6-0.

"Marie had played some singles and some doubles this year. It was good to see her get a win," Newton head coach Michael Bryan said. "I think it was good that we got to play Rockdale again because we were rained out last year and we couldn't reschedule it."

Rockdale's Bianca Brown took care of Newton's Trinity Kinnon 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Rockdale's Summer Walker blanked Kelsey Swinson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

"When you have a player as good as their No. 1 player, a lot of times you don't see anyone like that until we go to state," Bryan said. "I think it's good to see people at that level. I think at the very least, his girls would be as strong as any girls in our region.

"He (Sansing) has a good team and it's always good to see competition like that going into region and state regardless of the outcome. We enjoy the opportunity to play them."
