Newton school board holds apparent illegal meeting

COVINGTON --The Newton County Board of Education held an apparent illegal closed meeting Tuesday to discuss the vice chair writing columns for the Citizen.

Before Tuesday's monthly meeting, the board met for executive session, and after discussing personnel and pending litigation, board Chairman Eddie Johnson asked Newton County School System Superintendent Gary Mathews to leave the room and send in attorney Kent Campbell, according to board Vice Chair Jeff Meadors.

Meadors writes a weekly column on education for the Citizen.

Meadors claims that Johnson brought up concerns with him about writing an opinion column for the Citizen, as he has done since January. Meadors said Johnson and Campbell spoke to him about writing in opposition to House Resolution 1162 that dealt with local board control, even though the Newton BOE took a position against the measure earlier this year, and said that a few Newton teachers had complained about some issues brought up in a column even though Meadors claimed it wasn't directed at any local teachers but rather statewide and legislative issues.

"My articles come from more than 25 years of experience," Meadors said Thursday.

Additionally, Meadors said that Campbell asked him to remove his board affiliation from the signature line of his column, and Meadors felt he also was implying that he should stop writing altogether because some board members were concerned that the general public assumed he was expressing the feelings of the entire board.

"(The columns) are my own opinion," Meadors said, adding that elected officials, such as state Rep. Doug Holt and Rockdale County Board of Education member Brad Smith, also write opinion columns for the Citizen that include their elected affiliations.

Meadors said Thursday that he does not share confidential matters in his columns and normally covers national, state and local educational issues.

"I work hard to support our schools," Meadors said, adding that he also is a strong supporter of local teachers.

When asked by the Citizen if the meeting was held during executive session, Meadors said that all five board members were present at the time of the meeting, the doors were shut to the meeting room and no vote had been taken to end the closed session.

Under Georgia's Sunshine Laws, school boards are required to transact business in the open unless members are discussing employee personnel matters, pending litigation or real estate acquisition.

"A lawyer is entitled to meet in a closed session with a local government agency only to discuss pending or threatened litigation. That is not what was happening here, and thus it would be illegal to conduct a closed meeting with the lawyer present to simply discuss the writing of a newspaper column by a board member and what is reflected as a part of that column," said David Hudson, attorney for the Georgia Press Association.

Meadors said Friday that it's his opinion after the fact that the meeting was a violation of the Open Meetings law.

"I regret this distraction from our system goals and student achievement, yet the board chair, after admitting that he never reads the paper, essentially spearheaded a witch hunt based on incorrect assumptions about my columns and he chose a meeting that violates the right to notice and the keeping of minutes of the Georgia Open Meetings Act," Meadors wrote in an email Friday. "He sent out the superintendent and co-opted the school board attorney to direct me to contact the Newton Citizen and 'insist' that they remove my board affiliation from my columns. This is the third meeting where the topic of the Newton Citizen has been a focus ... where at least one individual has spoken about investigating the newspaper.

"Since there was no substance to any claims of the chairman related to my columns, and since he took issue with a column where I mentioned the hiring of friends and family in school systems, my personal opinion is that this violation of legal meetings was fueled by a disgruntled system employee," Meadors added.

When asked by the Citizen on Thursday to comment on the issues brought up with Meadors and with regard to holding an executive session meeting to discuss those issues, Campbell and Johnson refused to comment, saying they do not publicly discuss items handled in executive session.

There is no legal restriction on public discussion of matters that are handled in executive session.

"It is totally within the discretion of a government member whether to disclose what is said at a closed meeting. There is no penalty for doing so, and any attempt to penalize would have serious Constitutional problems due to the restriction on free speech," Hudson said. Also, there are "rights of a government member to speak to the public, including his constituents, about whatever occurs in the course of a meeting -- opened or closed."

Mathews would not comment on the issue.

"I have no comment at this time, as this is a matter amongst BOE members or else I would have been included in the executive session," Mathews said Thursday.

Sunshine Laws provide penalties for noncompliance with the Open Meetings law, including anyone who knowingly conducts or participates in such a meeting being guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $500. Public officials may also be subject to recall. The Attorney General also may bring civil or criminal action to enforce compliance.

Jeff Meadors, is a school board member with a gift for making even the most convoluted and complicated education issues clear for our community members and he is under fire for going above and beyond his elected duties while exercising freedom of speech by writing a column for this newspaper. The school board tried to strong arm him into giving up his column in an illegal closed meeting. Now, Mr. Meadors writes about many issues, but I think it's no coincidence that the school board had nothing to say about Mr. Meadors' column when it appeared in the Covington News. The Newton Citizen has been honestly reporting the shortcomings of the school system as evidenced by the out of control shenanigans going on at Alcovy High School. I think the blip above about the hiring of friends and family sure did make someone mad at central office- Dennis Carpenter, whose unqualified wife is running what should be the best high school in the county (AHS) into the ground. None of us should be surprised that the same school board that would sit back and allow Dr. L. Carpenter to mismanage AHS would also hold an illegal meeting to try to silence one of its members.

Do something, fellow community members. Hold your school board representatives accountable for this illegal meeting. Support Jeff Meadors and his column here at the Newton Citizen. Demand the resignation of the Carpenters.

It is unreal to me to think they sent him to talk to the paper. Mrs. Floyd will investigate the heck out of them - forget about investigating the news paper. It amazes me that they took on Floyd she asks the toughest questions. This would make a good Lifetime movie.

Dear Mr Johnson and Mr Campbell I cannot thank you enough for demanding that Meadors go to the newspaper. Now the public knows that every single elected body in this county has lost it's mind. Just for review. You hold an illegal meeting and you demand the vice chair to go make demands on the local paper. How is that working for you?

0

Truckermother 2 years, 1 month ago

Is this the best Johnson can do? Is he going after other BOE members about what they do and say in their private practice? Investigate a paper? Who says stuff like that? We have a career academy that won't open, a disaster high school on Hwy 36 and major teacher morale problems and this is how they spend their time going after a columnist who happens to be a board member and educator? Isn't this America and can't we speak on the issues or do we just need to sweep Tiger Town and the conflict of intersest that has created it under the rug?

1

NewtonNeighbor 2 years, 1 month ago

Good grief. The paper and even the Atlanta news seems to be reporting weekly about the state of our schools (violence, drugs, gangs and the like) and the school board is busy pulling an illegal witch-hunt on one of their own? Hang in there, Mr Meadors.

personally I hope Meadors leaves the school board and runs for a higher office this year during qualifying - we need a fighter in a bigger role

I am so glad this mess came out to the light. Outrageous. When we have the problems in our schools where teachers cannot even get through the halls without safety issues this board chair attacks another boe member for speaking out? R rated movies at Alcovy High during graduation tests and an entirely absent principal. I read his columns and I LOVE them. I don't see anyone else talking about the hard issues statewide. Where does a board chair get off thinking he has the right to make up his own Open Meetings rules? I think some should be recalled on this board. We need to know who was behind this? If he does not read the paper then who is really behind this? I have never read anything but strong support for teachers in these columns. Who is really behind this?

0

henrystamm 2 years, 1 month ago

What else is new? This board wastes our hard earned tax money right and left under the disguised reason to benefit the children. Most likely none of theirs go to the public schools in Newton County. But if you live in Clayton County you cam come hear to increase the population in the system. Unfortunately we have one of the worst educated kids in the State and country. They have little to show fore so they have to muscle free speech. Smells like Obama, his Chicago Gangsters and the Ant-American Democrats. Sham!!

0

Watermelonlover 2 years, 1 month ago

The school system is obviously worried about their image. Newton High uses title one dollars to hire their own PR person even though there is one at the central building. I have watched the boe meetings where two boe members in particular look at the newspaper people and tell them what to print. So why would Johnson start this mess which may not end well?

0

Henrycounselor 2 years, 1 month ago

Well thanks a lot Mr. Johnson. You have made a mockery out of the school board and this will surely be picked up by SACS. Personally I hope Meadors goes after you with Sam Olens. Investigating the paper? Now who is behind that. Who on your board does investigations on a routine basis that would say that? And why aren't you people spending time talking about the high school that is sinking faster than the Titanic instead of who writes what in the paper. And why can't he write about what he wants? Should he only write about what pleases you and ignore the problems like you ignore the sinking high school now commonly called the Zoo on 36?

1

Truckermother 2 years, 1 month ago

This is the same guy who voted against the low bid for Newton High replacement. Search the web and there is a video. He said he never had a visual although one boe member in the article and video pointed out that there had been one. He also voted against Mrs. Fuhrey last week. If I were Meadors I would not give him the time of day.

0

The only way I know what is going on in schools in this country is by his columns and the public forums he has done. I went to two. My BOE member won't even return my emails.

So typical of a Democrat to try to shut up a Republican. It is a trend lately trying to limit the free speech of everyone. Wake up people this is America. If you want to tell people what they can and cannot say take a plane out of here.

0

Watermelonlover 2 years, 1 month ago

Hey Mr. Johnson - Meadors does NOT report to you. He reports to the citizens of district one and this county who vote and I for one have complained to him a LOT about the high school in our district. He reports to us and it sounds like he is trying to do so

0

CharlieBrown0797 2 years, 1 month ago

Thank you Mr. Meadors for the support you give the teachers everyday. Thank you for having the courage to speak your mind on topics important to teachers. I truly hope the other members did not join in on this "witch hunt" and violation of the law.

"Public officials may also be subject to recall."

There you go. Citizens of Newton County, if you REALLY care about what is going on in your schools and about stopping illegal behavior like this then the power is in your hands. It is time to recall Johnson and anyone else who tries thwart Meadors or anyone else from improving our schools.

"he took issue with a column where I mentioned the hiring of friends and family in school systems"

Hmmmmmm, I wonder who that might be? Nepotism, anyone?

I think it's time for Dr. John Trotter of MACE to come down and take a look at this Carpenter situation and how it is hurting teachers.

Mr Meadors is the only one on the school board with any first hand knowledge of school related issues. Thank you for bringing the meeting to the media and exposing the others who are leading this false claim. Remember, the truth is the truth!

0

Personalsavior 2 years ago

This article mentions investigations. I would like to know as an employee if it s true what we hear that board members are investigating teachers for writing comments?

0

Grandcanyon 2 years ago

That is right Avidreader he is the only one on the board that apparently knows and even cares about what is going on. I think it is great that he brought it to the media's attention because the public has a right to know what is going on. Mr Meadors deserves wheere he is and he is exactly the kind of person we need on the board. If anybody could be the voice of NCSS he could be.

Thank you Mr Meadors for all that you do.

0

djwalden 2 years ago

Mr. Meadors continues to be one of the most thoughtful and vocal proponent of our children, their schools, and our teachers. Having read all of his columns, I cannot find a single instance in which he discredited the NCSS, shared confidential information, or personally attacked anyone. This meeting should have never been held.

That said, let's not throw Mr. Campbell under the bus for this incident. He was hired by the BOE to act as its attorney; to advise on legal matters and to handle litigation. He doesn't set policy, nor does he call meetings like this. He serves at the pleasure of the BOE. When the Board Chair calls him into a meeting like this, it is his job to attend. Period. Put the blame for this unfortunate incident where it belongs. Mr. Johnson alone bears the responsibility for calling this meeting.

0

Jugsapoppin 2 years ago

Wow after reading these comments I bet Johnson has a real hang over. What a buzz kill to see that you demanded another board member talk to the press when you didn't even know the meeting was legal unbelievable.

0

Watermelonlover 2 years ago

Thank you Mrs. Floyd for this edition of the Real Thugs of Newton County. I will be tuned in for the next one.

0

Yallneedprozac 2 years ago

Your right Dj the meeting should have never been held. It seems to be that the only voice that we as a county have these days for the children is Mr Meadors. It would be nice if the man had some back up as far as doing what is best and doing what is right. The last time I checked the BOE had 5 members not 1.

The work he does is outstanding and is always focused on the children's best interest but still doesn't excuse the other members for doing nothing to help him.

0

amp72 2 years ago

Let your voices be heard, beyond these articles! PLEASE email Mr. Meadors and Dr. Mathews and tell them how you feel. It will only take a moment and it will really hit home as to how upset we are with this latest incident. Mr. Meadors is in a rough spot now and deserves to know he is supported, and Dr. Mathews needs to know we are serious about making changes immediately. If Dr. Mathews does nothing then he is basically allowing the BOE to conduct an illegal meeting because a certain someone and his wife are upset. That is unacceptable and those responsible should be punished. Please contact them today!

If we are going to start putting limits on free speech Mr. Johnson then would you please direct President Obama to go to CNN and tell them to stop putting "President of the United States " on anything associated with him? He does not represent me on his apology tours. ONLY Newton County would have a BOE chairman who uses secrecy and backroom illegal politicking to silence free speech of columns that I love to read weekly.

0

HonestAbe 2 years ago

I would like to hear what the other board members have to say about this. This is another example where politicans and lawyers are trying to distort the constitution. If we as a nation don't start standing up and demand that constitutional values such as freedom of speech and freedom of the press are adhered to than we will continue to weaken as a democratic society. This is a tough statement- but i believe all politicians attending a closed meeting by the Newton County School Board that is violation of Georgia law should be reported to the ethics board and face a recall or asked to resign. They all should know the law but not a one of them walked out of the illegal meeting? Not even Mr Meadors who admits this meeting was illegal? I agree that Mr Meadors has every right to write for the Newton Citizens or any other paper, but if you know you are doing something illegal as this meeting was- you have to nwalk out

Are you saying it's alright to violate freedom of speech and the press as long as you are a Newton County politician? Appears you need to look in the mirror before saying the word ignorance.

0

doubleaww 2 years ago

Honest Abe I don't disagree with you but I think Meadors said that he realized it was illegal later but why did the legal expert -aka attorney- stop the whole thing. They hire him to protect the legal open meetings. I'm not defending any of them but Johnson has no buisness being chairman of our school system board and none of them should be dumb enough to let this go on for a third time. What has the news people done to them? Report the arrests, assaults, tasers, food fights, attacks at school led by the wife of someone who has no buisness in a top job- he cannot be objective and obviously went off on the Newton Citizen.

0

gomab1 2 years ago

There is a process for removing Johnson. The others would have to vote in majority to censure him for holding three illegal meetings. That would begin the house cleaning. Citizens will have to demand this through emails, phone calls, and social media and letters to editor or it won't happen.

0

spdracer90 2 years ago

Mr. Meadors seems to be the only one getting it right. Others are upset because the truth or rather Mr. Meador's opinion ( and the opinion of many I might add) hurts doesn't it?? Something needs to be done about these closed meetings--Johnson and Campbell-you need to go!! It is wonderful to know there are bullys on the BOE! There is so much wrong with NCSS and this is what some BOE members want to waste valuable time and our tax dollars on! How much needs to be said and what needs to happen to get the Zoo on 36 under control? That should be top priority not what is in Mr. Meador's column. There needs to be some house cleaning and it needs to start with the BOE!

0

dennistay53 2 years ago

We expect the students to obey the laws and rules at schools. It is not to much to set the right example by requiring the board to do the same. There is no excuse for holding illegal meetings in violation of the sunshine law for ANY of the school board members. It is your job as elected officials to know the laws and abide by them. When in doubt you always error on the side of openness to the public. If the heat is too hot for anyone at the NCSS so as to move them to unlawful closed door meetings as to avoid the press- then they need resign.

This conflict of interest call it nepotism call it whatever is killing our system. I know these people well and I told them when this mess started that you don't do this in Newton county you just don't. But it went on and on until I had to move away from it and stay locked away on my side of the building could not support it cannot defend it on today or any other day. I have been here since before this duo came to town and we are in the worse sitution we have ever been in with morale. Acadex is not done right, administrators say out loud they run the food flies, bad movies shown during classes, violation of county cell unit policy and some students are treated differently than others. It is no way to run our school which I love. I want out but don't know what to do.

0

Like Eric Holder should be charged with contempt this makes no sense. Telling one board member to go TO the press and other ones not to talk. You cannot have it both ways. It cant be closed and open. Can't be legal and illegal. Somebody needs to keep a eye on their meetings this is sloppy sloppy sloppy. What is this chairmans background?

0

Satan69 2 years ago

It has not been this bad at the BOE for a long time. What is the difference? Look down hwy 36 and the operations. The nepotism issue is the biggest problem in ncss. WHY is this allowed to exist. Hey Jugsapoppin

You know this was real easy Mr. Bus Driver turned Board Chairman. Have the kahunas to talk to a fellow member man to man one on one instead of creating some DRAMATICS like somebody with too much time on he hands does. There was no reason to involved other members in this or put one well liked member on a hot seat. Because of you this is all over the place so thank you Johnson and whatever employee put you up to this. YOU Mr Chair have hurt everyone in this in whath could have been a parking lot discussion one on one. Coward. You knew it was wrong or you would have done it in front of the Citizen reporter and what are the other two times about.

Nepotism is the action of a member that directly or indirectly influence the University employment (e.g., hiring, promotion, supervision, evaluation, and determination of salary) or academic progress (e.g., grading and advising) of any other University member with whom he or she has a personal relationship.” This definition includes instances where there is no direct influence on employment or academics, but the relationship has a negative impact on the educational or work environment

0

Watermelonlover 2 years ago

Don't let nepotism interfere with your company's operations and possibly create an environment that is demoralizing to your employees.

0

Watermelonlover 2 years ago

Workers who are the most innovative or productive or those who possess visionary leadership are inevitably propelled to the top. That's the image many of us have of the workplace. In reality, the practice of favoring and promoting relatives or paramours, more commonly known as nepotism, is widely practiced in companies large and small across the country.

The dangers of nepotism to your company shouldn't be overlooked. It's not only wise to promote antinepotism policies but also to regularly monitor your staff to ensure that such relationships haven't developed.

One of the chief complaints in a company that operates through nepotism is the patent lack of fairness. Perceived favoritism of a relative can cause dissatisfaction among workers and lower morale. Employees may have less incentive to perform their responsibilities diligently and proficiently if they feel that the path to promotion is undermined by nepotism. Indeed, a company employing such tactics may find its more valuable employees seeking new employment where their talent is better recognized. At a minimum, workers will likely complain and become embittered and less productive in the face of blatant nepotism.

If Newton BOE would do like Rockdale BOE is doing with these "voluntary resignations" especially at Prison Zoo 36 you would see it all settle down and get somebody like Kruskamp back over here. We have had enough of this charade. We teachers are tired of hearing bad things about our school but truth is they are ALL happening and worse. Counseling at this school has gone to dawgs but you cannot hire friends with no experience and expect good results.

I have a problem with the fact that one of our best board members and probably one of the best teachers and advocate for children gets beaten up because of the columns he writes. You know what I say is this at least he is not afraid to speak up and inform people about whats going on. I think really if it wasn't for his writings we wouldn't know half of what was going on with certain things, and who says you have to like it don't read it if you don't like it.

I think I would find something else to complain about other then a wonderful role model for children giving us info that we need to know or is helpful to know.

Thanks for all the info great articles always. You do a fantastic job Mr Meadors.

Keep up the good work.

0

amp72 2 years ago

Agreed. And it just shows the mentality of certain people in the educational system in our county. They are concerned with nothing but IMAGE. Plain and simple. It is sad and it is the reason many of our schools and children are suffering. Few people want to do the dirty work, the hard work, to fix the schools. They would rather dress things up and act like nothing is wrong. That is dangerous and in my opinion immoral. Dr. Mathews needs to exert some leadership and NOW. He says he won't comment because he wasn't invited and it was a BOE matter. Well if he's not careful they will go after him next. I would like to see the Citizen file a formal complaint with the state Attorney General and get to the bottom of this. Heads should roll because this is simply a witch hunt to get Mr. Meadors for having the guts to call out the people causing the REAL trouble in our schools.

0

Kodaanddylansmom 2 years ago

As a parent of the school system I find this upsetting. I cannot believe that this is going on why in the world would they go after this guy the last time I checked it isn't a crime to educate people on what is going on in their school district and informing the public of what they should know. Sometimes maybe their are strong opinions about it sometimes there isn't, truth be told the articles are informative and educational things that need to be said. I think I would rather have someone that has been in education for many years tell me whats going on versus someone that is upsetting the school board every two seconds with craziness. Such as Mr Carpenter.

However strong willed individuals always seem to have these kinds of problems. Speak your mind and write your columns. People care about what you have to say because its the truth and because your doing it for the right reasons.

I think people should listen to Franklin Perry running in district 4 he has a lot of really really good information and really can put all this in perspective. We need someone to run in district 2- Ricky Corley come back and run anyone please run.

0

Satan69 2 years ago

Joan I couldn't agree with you more. Meadors is a very strong leader, force in education a wonderful advocate for the kids. I see why people are afraid of him. He is one that people listen to because of what he stands for and isn't afraid to voice an opinion, those are the kinds of voices we need in the community and the kind of voice we need for the children.

The guy is great and he says what he feels and does everything in his power to see that the right things are done for teachers and students. That's what the BOE is all about not all this other crap that's going on. So let the guy do what he does best and furthermore let him write his columns because we as people have a right to see what is going on in our community.

0

amp72 2 years ago

And that's just it. Certain people don't want you to know what is going on in our community. Meadors is seen as a threat to them, and the M.O. of some people in this county is to bully, pressure, and threaten those who ask questions or disagree with the status quo. Just ask any former or current teacher at Alcovy.

0

Chilidawg 2 years ago

Without pointing fingers we know that every school board member should be aware of the laws and regulations that pertain to meetings. That being said there should be no closed door meetings. Anyone found particaping in a closed door meeting should be excluded from the Board, or any public office. Closed door meeting cause me to wonder what they're hiding.

0

Yallneedprozac 2 years ago

The thing is they are trying to bully the wrong guy Amp. He will stand his ground and out of all the BOE members he isn't afraid to voice anything. The guy is a threat but that's a threat that sometimes you need those kind of people in your corner, I know this if someone was going to back me on something for the school or anything relating to it I would really want it to be him and let me tell you why. He will make sure you get done what you need, how you need it done and in a timely manner and if it isn't something will be said about it.

They couldn't have asked for a better model person for the school board and that is said by many more then people realize.

I have heard that the teachers present and former are having a hell of a time with this.
Ahh but the question is Amp the man in command for District 1 our double threat guy let's see if that doesn't change it soon because I know he doesn't approve of this. Just read the articles. What is your call Amp give me some feed back.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you 100%. When I said Meaders is viewed as a threat I meant that in a positive way. That's why they called him in, to scold him and try to shut him up. I am glad Meadors won't wilt under the pressure. believe me, if we had more like Jeff Meadors we wouldn't have as many problems. I do believe that Mr. Meadors will stand his ground, which is not always easy. He has made himself a target and he deserves our support. I would hope people would show up at the next BOE meeting and demand answers and show support for the one person trying to do right by the parents, students, and teachers of Newton County.

So whom exactly are you referring to Chilidawg all the members or just one in particular because it sounds like you are kind of in disagreement. Which everyone is entitled to their own opinion , but if that's the case then we would have no board. I myself have a big problem with closed door meetings because I like to know what's going on in my childs school. So I do agree there.

In some respect your pointing the finger but more or less saying read between the lines because you think the Double threat guy should not be there. Go ahead voice your opinion.

So it seems to me that some people don't appreciate a good thing when they have it, and what I mean by that is let me raise the question of informative versus disloyal. So you would rather a school board official not speak out on whats going on or would you rather have him tight lipped like the rest of them? Some people really floor me with what they have to say. They get mad when someone is doing a horrible job but they get upset when they have an outgoing informative decent individual such as Mr Meadors and they still have a complaint you can't have it both ways. I myself think Mr Meadors is doing a hell of a job of keeping the public informed and doing the job of a BOE member that should be done.

All's I will say is who is the one going to bat for the teachers and the students? Granted it is his district however even if it wasn't his district he would still want something done and do everything he could to help his fellow board member in achieving it. That's the difference in caring in what you do versus just doing it for the PRAISE....

I have to agree Henrycounselor what is it going to take to for people to see that Mr Meadors is really all about the school system. He is the only one that get's stuff done everyone else is to afraid to speak up and say that the teachers shouldn't be treated like they are and that things need to change for kids. Let me ask you all question WHO else is going to do it if he doesn't I don't see anyone else breaking their neck to speak up. When your passionate about something you go after it and make changes not sit back and hope it changes. That is the difference I personally hope when his term ends he stays because I feel more secure with my children in his district I know if I went to him and voiced a concern he would do what he could to fix it. That's why people dislike him because they can't rattle his cage and get him to break. That's the difference between excellence and failure if they can get you to break then your job is never done but if they can't and you stand your ground only good things come out of it and in my book that's excellence.

You all have very good points about our District 1 Rebel. You see everyone there are still good people left in the world and Mr Meadors is one of the best around that I have seen by far. He is a great educator I know because my daughter took his class in the Summer a couple years back and I have met him great guy. I don't like to hear bad things about good people now if it needs to be addressed then by all means please say something.

My question here is what exactly has Mr Meadors done wrong except for stating the facts and opinions that we as a society and people of the community and parents need to know. It is bothersome to me that we have so many crooks in and on our Board. I think that the right thing to do is if you have something to say or ask Mr Meadors go to the BOE meeting tonight and address it . I don't think that he would have a problem in the world answering it.

When you have people that do what they do because they care then let them do the job they can and make the changes that need to be made, one of our schools is in need of some serious help and I think with some help from Meadors and some others the school maybe functional again. A little word to the wise you all are going after the wrong one because he loves a challenge and he will become more determined the more people talk. Do your thing Mr Meadors we need your help.

I have to raise a question to everyone in this comment forum why do good positive people always get bullied and harassed by the people that could care less about others? I hate that everything in the paper and that has been said about Mr Meadors has been backwards and not true. He is one of the best teachers and advocates for the children. This man will break his neck to make sure things are done right for teachers and kids. What I like most about him is his determination on speaking on things that everybody else is afraid to talk about, also he will not back down from anyone whether it is negative or not.
To be perfectly honest we need more people like him to serve on school boards because this is what the BOE is all about fixing the problems of the school system what good does it do for everybody to harass one man about doing what he is supposed to do and furthermore what good does it do to sit around and point fingers about who did what and why they did it. Here is a good question does that help the community placing blame on the probably one of the hardest working educators on the board? No it doesn't it shows ignorance and it doesn't solve anything.

Let's do what we need to do Teach, Educate and help the school system not argue and point fingers. It is very childish maybe you all should go to AHS and have a food fight since you all are acting like children.

Thanks Mr Meadors for being adult.

0

amp72 2 years ago

Um, I could be wrong here but I think everyone on this forum commenting on this situation is IN FAVOR of what Mr. Meadors is doing. People are lashing out at the BOE for feeling the heat and in turn trying to turn that heat on Mr. Meadors. I think you need to read the comments again. Again, everyone on here SUPPORTS Meadors.

0

Beautifulblueeyes 2 years ago

So the question is raised about who is right and wrong? Well I will say the pointing fingers are wrong and the voice of reason is right. I can't help but notice that there is an awful lot of finger pointing going on these days, if we put as much effort in to placing blame on the most reasonable board member that we did into other things then we would have an awesome school system. It really bothers me as a mother that everybody would rather focus on an article in the Newton citizen that is very informative by the way then focus on the BIG PROBLEMS like West Newton Elementary school and AHS what in the world is being done about these schools??????? Nothing because everyone is too focused on a stupid article. NO offense Mr Meadors I enjoy your columns but these people need a serious reality check.. Let me tell you all why don't you come to the BOE meeting tonight and please please by all means make sure all of your questions, comments and complaints are heard.

Tonight at 7 pm Newton Board of Education.

Truer words have never sounded so great to me. It really is a shame that we have a bunch of childish people in and on the school board. People your messing with others children and their education. Is that fair to the kids that we can't stop the arguing for the moment and focus on what is actually going on here, the schools that desperately need or focus and attention like AHS and West Newton. Come on the kids suffer while you all are sitting their bashing Mr Meadors for writing an article that needed to be written. Also what is it solving. We have kids being bullied and getting suspended from schools for food fights and beating the hell out one another but that isn't as important as an article.

This tells me 2 things it tells me that we have our priorities backwards and that one person has the right idea. Can someone please help your District 1 guy do what what everyone on the board should be doing helping the kids and focusing on them and their problems. Whats going on.

Come on Newton County!!!!!!!!!!!

0

Satan69 2 years ago

I have a question If the the Board is arguing about an article being written who in the world is taking care of the kids's problems and trying to figure out the issue surrounding AHS? I was just curious.

Wait I know its the guy writting the article's he is the one doing and doing.

Good job Mr. Meadors Thank you for your continued support and everything you do for the Teachers and Students it is greatly appreciated.

0

Satan69 2 years ago

Well Amp there are a couple that don't but all I have to say is ALL IN FAVOR OF MEADORS SAY I. I love this you see good will overcome the bad. They need to stop trying to turn the heat on to Meadors because he has more followers then people realize, I personally think it is awesome. Let's see maybe he should write and article about his followers and maybe the board should take a look at the chaos that has been started because of this. Aww who would have thought that one guy could make such a big impact? That's what happens when you stand for what you believe in and hold your ground.

You rock Mr Meadors. Glad to have you in my district!!!!

0

amp72 2 years ago

Yeah, I just meant the vast majority of the people commenting support Mr. Meadors' mission 100%. And by the way, I second your motion!

0

MissLoy 2 years ago

In my opinion Jeff Meadors deserves every bit of this support and I think we should all stand behind him. Amp I completely agree if we had more people like Jeff more would get accomplished. He is a very strong board member and everyone knows it and at least he has the guts to stand up and speak about what is right and he doesn't care what others say especially negative and what I have noticed is the more negative the more he comes back at people. He is one board member that the votes were not wasted on. He is an asset to the board and they all are lucky to have him. They all could take a lesson from Jeff be a voice not a shadow.

Thank you for everything you do and continue to do.

0

Satan69 2 years ago

Thanks Amp, but seriously the guy really does deserve it and really if we got down to the heart of it, he would be the one that people would remember becuase of what he does and what he continues to do for the teachers and students. Not to mention the great job he does with GPC his name is everywhere and when it really comes down to it he would be the one board member they remember anyway.

He has more support then he even realizes I think. Let's see how many followers we can get to agree Amp.

So what was up with the Prayer last night? I felt like I was going to Sunday BOE meeting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funbags78 2 years ago

Who needs school board attorneys. I will be contacting the AG about every thing in the future with this board that strikes me as odd until we shuffle at least 3 of them out. Meeting in the parking lot one on one with school board attorney is wrong. We are watching you

0

JoanD 2 years ago

I'd like the AG to do more investigating of BOE members having parking lot meetings with the school board attorney before a meeting. What is this one hiding?

0

Blueeyeddevil 2 years ago

What did the AG say about the illegal meeting?

Insdiejob2012 2 years ago

None of this mess surprises any of us. Two BOE members and one central office employee have been after Mathews and Meadors for almost 2 years now. They hate them because M and M represent a tide of positive change and a large dose of house cleaning. I hope the other 3 get the boot and M & M hang tough and kick some rear end. We think it's likely because you have two strong white men and that is hard for weak leaders to stomach and we have our dose of weak leaders mainly hired by one weak leader. I pray for the NCSS but I don't scream and shout when I pray. When board members will vote for Carpenter to be promoted the same way Mathews recommended promoting Fuhrey and they deny there is history to do the same then this is nothing but an attack on Mathews and on whites. Bottom line it people

0

Insdiejob2012 2 years ago

that whole bunch is bad for newton and bad for politics shouting you liar across our historic courthouse and in jail and all crazy up in they mess

I think that everybody needs to come to the BOE meeting Tuesday Night at 7 p.m April 17, 2012. I think that it would be good for everyone and their brother to come and voice an opinion.

So tell your family members and friends.

0

CBSfinder 2 years ago

Inside I have to agree with my friend they do represent positive change and some just can't stand that at all. That's a good name for them M & M ha the change reform guys. I would like to see them clean house, oh no worries on them hangin tough Inside those two are rock solid when it comes to standing their ground have to give some credit cause those biys don't play went it comes to the school board, this I know just look at all the heat Meadors has taken in the last couple weeks alone and what does he do lashes right back at them. Awesome guy to know by the way. These two will do some real good things for NCSS if people leave them be and stop harassing them and complaining about nit picky articles. If they weren't guilty they wouldn't fight it so much.

I say go team M & M have at it make all the changes you need and want whatever you all feel necessary we trust you.

0

Insdiejob2012 2 years ago

I think everyone need to come support M&M at the school board meeting Tuesday show some real support about how we appreciate everything that they are doing I think that would be so great because every now and then we need how much we are appreciated instead of being bashed every minute of the day.

I think I speak for many when I say that they are two stand up individuals that deserve a pat on the back and just a thanks for everything you do.

So what do you say people you with me?

0

Satan69 2 years ago

I have to say if any two individuals can make some adequate changes and show some positive reflection on this whole mess despite all the hear say that we have heard about these two the last couple months actually to be perfectly honest the last year and a half really, I say go for it. There is nothing but positive that both of these two people want to do so let'em work their magic. I feel confident with team M&M trying to do the right things for the NCSS very confident and I wish them nothing but luck in their mission. I have to agree with my friend though about coming to the meeting and showing support.

That would be the best thing. Show some support people for the two men in command.

0

MissLoy 2 years ago

I have to say this school system needs some serious changing I mean it seems to be falling apart and nobody is taking it seriously except M&M and they seem to show the most support and they want to help but they have no backup it seems that everyone else would rather speak about columns being written and who is not doing this or that. That shouldn't even be the topic what should be the topic is the lack of support the students and teachers are receiving and how to fix it. So why don't we all come together and try to fix the mess argue later about bs and put all the bickering back and forth aside. I say fix it and move on. However it will not be a quick fix but at least need a plan to get it started so why don't we start by listening to Mr Meadors about his district and his school and what needs to be done and help him out.

So please people come show your support and voice a plan or a solution for the problem and see if we can't help M&M get this rolling.

0

Littlemissmuffett 2 years ago

I hope it does not happen but I can see Meadors going the way of CC Bates. Both smart. Both advanced degrees from fine schools. These types can't stomach the ship of fools and crazies that make ups school boards just for the show. When you take a look at that board it is pretty obvious.

0

Kodaanddylansmom 2 years ago

You know that makes me very upset as a parent to think that probably one of the best board members that we have ever had in Newton County would even consider that. I'm with you littlemissmuffett I really hope that it isn't a thought, but if it were me I know I would be sick and tired of this craziness always harassing me because of articles I write and expressing my feelings for the schools, teachers and students I could see where that could become tiresome. However in the mans defense giving the fact that he has 25 years experience under his belt I do believe if it came to listening to possibilities of what to do it would be him I listen to before these other jokers.

I think I may just show my support Tuesday night just to show him how much I appreciate what he has done and that he is a wonderful BOE member. Just hang tough and everything will work itself out.

0

Megirl 2 years ago

Oh goodness do I have to pray about this. This is not something I want to read about!!!!! Don't even think that out loud.

0

Funbags78 2 years ago

Looks like M&M are going to have to bring out the big guns people. Let's show'em who the big dogs are. It is a matter of who wants things done and who doesn't. Let's stop playing games and get to the roots of the problem and get NCSS fixed and back on track.

0

Grandcanyon 2 years ago

Go for it Megirl im with ya. Plain and simple they need to leave M&M alone stop trying to force them out because a little FYI for all of you niether one is going anywhere because I think spite and reputation really mean alot to these two so let the battle of wits begin. Try to push'em they will do their best push back. HAHAHAHA stand your ground boys.

0

Satan69 2 years ago

That's what i'm talking about. Let'em know who is charge M& M. That's a great name for the dream team. All right people lets get this party started. I have a good feeling about how this is going to turn out. I also think that a couple people may be very disappointed with it. All's I can say is suck it up. Don't dish it if you can't take it. Doesn't feel so good on the recieving end of that does it haters?

Get'em Dream Team.

0

Insdiejob2012 2 years ago

Oh my goodness Satan!!!! I think there is a rally going on. I wonder just how many people will show up for this tonight? Wouldn't it be hiliarious if people showed up holding signs that said go team M&M? I would die in hysterics even though it would be so appropriate. Then there would probably be a prayer and candle lighting ceremony. To funny.

All I can say is go team M&M.

0

Megirl 2 years ago

Now Now Satan don't start a riot. You do have a point though I have got to agree with almost every word you said. There are a good few that are going to be very disappointed and many very happy. I'm sure that the dream team doesn't mind on the other hand I really don't think they would care one way or the other besides they are there to do a job, the others are there to gossip and point fingers. Let's do the job we need to and point fingers later. What do you say?

0

Watermelonlover 2 years ago

Thanks you Megirl for saying that because that is exactly what needs to be done keep the focus on the problems at hand not on everything in between because what is actually being solved by skipping all the other issues that really need peoples attention? Nothing it makes people, parents and school officials mad because they are trying to focus on one thing and three out of 5 board members are focused on pointing fingers and raising cane about informative articles that are being written. That my friends is enough to make people want to throw their hands in the air and say to hell with this I don't need it. I hope that isn't the intention of some, because you all would really have a mess if that was to happen. Especially if your Vice Chair left.

Think before you speak and point fingers is it worth it? I say no and so does half of Newton County.

0

Henrycounselor 2 years ago

You know the sad part is I live in Henry county but work partly here and in Newton County and really you all have a great District 1 guy, we need someone like him in Henry. If we had someone that cared as much as this man does and did the things that he has Henry county BOE would jump for joy. Before you all push his buttons to much there are many counties that would fight to have him on there board believe me I have heard talk.

Knowing what I do about him and meeting him the brief few times I have all's I have to say you all are fools to be treating him and Mr Matthews the way you are. Remember the phrase " A few good men"? well that's what you got you should thankful not spiteful. Few people really do care and these two really honestly and truly do.

Be careful Newton County....

0

Yallneedprozac 2 years ago

I'm going to be very upset if my District 1 guy leaves because it seems that he is the only one who wants to give his time to not only the students but the teachers and parents. He has helped me on numerous occasions not to mention my children love the guy my daughter was in his English class at GPC and my son was in a class with him at Rockdale career Academy. Wonderful man.

Please you all think before you all have a real mess.

0

amp72 1 year, 11 months ago

So what is the latest with this story? It should be obvious now that with this illegal board meeting and the ridiculous Alcovy lawsuit what is really going on in this county. Circle the wagons, protect your own behind, and take down anyone who gets in your way.
