Alcovy, Eastside county champs

COVINGTON -- The Alcovy boys and the Eastside girls track teams added to the leads they had after the first day of competition to win the inaugural Newton County Track and Field Championships held at Alcovy and ended on Thursday.

Both the Alcovy boys and the Eastside girls added 30 points to their tally to win the competition.

The Alcovy boys won the meet with 80 points with Newton coming in second with 53 points (38 track, 15 field) and Eastside finishing with 45 points (24 track, 21 field).

"It's a good feeling that we won this event being that it's the first time we had the Newton Cup," Alcovy boys coach Melvin Parker said.. "This is something we've wanted to do for some time and it's very competitive. It was a really good meet."

Both Eastside and Alcovy had three wins each three wins with Alcovy getting more second- and third-place finishes.

Winning for Alcovy were Anthony Anderson (pole vault -- 9 feet), Devonnte Tucker (triple jump -- 42-6 ) and Damon Gresham (discus -- 42-6).

Eastside's wins were from Jomandi Smith (long jump -- 21-7), Sheldon Rankins (shot put -- 46-0) and it also got a win in the high jump with Chavis Williams jumping it in 5-feet, 10 inches.

After adding 30 field-event points to the 48 the Eastside girls scored on the track on Wednesday, the winning team had a commanding 28-point lead with 78 points. Even though the Newton girls scored the fewest field points with 9, they started the day with a 10-point advantage, 34-24, over Alcovy. Newton was able to hold off Alcovy's charge to take second place with 43 points while Alcovy ended the meet with 40 points.

Eastside's Nylah Chavis had two of its three wins taking the top spot in the triple jump (34-0) and the high jump (5-4). Eastside's other win was provided by Alexia Somerset who won the discus with a throw of 100-feet, 7-inches.

Alcovy's Francesca Fugarino won the shot put with a throw of 31-6 with Newton's Keir Washington winning the long jump with a distance of 16-2 .
