Student allegedly attacked in Alcovy classroom

COVINGTON -- A 14-year-old Alcovy High School student was allegedly beaten in a classroom by two 16-year-olds Thursday morning, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office and the Newton County School System.

"Two boys entered a classroom and assaulted a young man," said Alcovy Principal LaQuanda Carpenter. "Both men were handled from a school discipline standpoint and were also arrested."

The assault occurred just as classes were changing around 10 a.m. and while the teacher from that classroom was in the hall, Carpenter said.

According to NCSO Public Information Officer Deputy Courtney Morrison, the school resource officer was called to respond to the classroom where the fight had taken place. The teacher informed the officer that two 16-year-olds had been involved in a physical altercation. The suspects were escorted from the classroom.

"The victim walked out of the classroom and said his head was hurting and advised one of the perpetrators repeatedly punched him in his head because allegedly he informed the school staff on Wednesday (March 7) that another student had contraband on him," Morrison said, referring to the NCSO incident report. "The victim was seen by the school nurse, treated for multiple lumps and abrasions to his head ... (he also) sustained bruises on his shoulders."

Morrison said both assailants sustained injuries to their knuckles and were treated, as well.

The 16-year-olds were charged with disruption of a public school and battery and were transported to Juvenile Court, where their parents were notified to pick them up.

The mother of the 14-year-old victim said her son has been bullied in the past and described this incident as "traumatic."

"I am not pleased. Bullying is serious. The teacher should have been in the room. It was the same class he was in the day before when he reported (that one of the perpetrators) showed him and another boy some marijuana," she said. "One of the boys was supposed to be in that class during that time, but the other boy was not even supposed to be in that class. He went into that class to help his buddy with the assault."

The mother said she plans to go to the school board to complain about how the reporting of the marijuana was handled as well as the teacher not being in the classroom at the time the fight broke out.

She said this was not the first time her son had been a victim of violence at Newton County Schools, saying that while a student at Indian Creek Middle School he was pushed up against a locker and held while money was taken from him and he was bullied while a student at Veterans Memorial Middle School and at Oak Hill Elementary School.

"I want the story out there and I want other parents to be aware," she said. "Newton County has not been good in my opinion, but it's getting worse."

Also, about 3:15 p.m. the same day, two 17-year-old students got into a fight at Alcovy High School while waiting to board the afternoon bus, striking each other with closed fists.

A school resource officer broke up the fight, Morrison said, and even after the two were separated, one of them broke away and struck the other in the face.

Arrested and charged with affray, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and disruption of a public school were Erophaus Mardarius Calhoun, 17, of 11014 Flat Shoals Road and Antwone Deshawn Hooks, 17, of 485 East Country Woods Drive.

The reason the teacher was not in the classroom at the time of this incident, is that they are instructed to stand outside their classroom door during class transitions to monitor student behavior in the hallways. Things have & will happen during this transition time.

I love how the mother wants to confront the school and the principal and the school board but not the kids' parents....That's the first thing that I would do

Great school. As others have said in comments on other stories, there is ZERO control at that school and the current administration needs a serious shake up. Why not take the guy who is back from Iraq and put him in charge? He would get that place in shape. School board, pay attention! Time to step in before someone gets killed. There are fights almost every day at this school. Enough!

Alcovy is getting worse every year!!!! And we as parents are suppose to feel safe sending our children there. REALLY???? Yes, teachers have a post , so who is watching the students in the class? Its no secret that there are drugs and gangs all over that school. WHO IS PROTECTING THE KIDS?

AHS makes the paper again-congrats! I feel terrible for the victim--I cannot imagine what he and his family must be going through! It is pathetic that our children cannot go to school without being afraid of being assaulted. The victim tried to do the right thing by reporting the alleged contraband and look what it got him!!! Something needs to be done! The other two need to be expelled period! Furthermore, if students are expelled or sent to Sharp or whatever it is called now, Mommy & Daddy need to foot the bill!!! What happened to zero tolerance regarding bullying? Too many young people take eductation for granted. Do you think this type of behavior is seen in poor countries where free education is scarce? If I was the mom of the victim I would make sure some heads would roll at the school level and with the two perpetrators. They need to know actions have consequences.

My daughter was in a classroom next door to where this fight took place, and she said she could hear the victim screaming and crying for help for an extended period of time. Was the teacher indeed at the door monitoring the halls? If so, how long did it take someone to break up this beating (yes, I said beating. This is definitely more than just a fight!). My daughter has told me on more than one occasion that teachers leave the rooms unattended during class change in order to use the restroom, get drinks, etc. She also says that there are never any teachers monitoring the halls during class change. Kids will do as much as they are allowed to get away with, which is why something must be done to improve supervision and safety of our students. To quote my wise 15-year old, "No one in authority cares at all about what happens at that school." Sad.

Sorry but maybe all your daughters facts may not be not correct. I subbed at AHS many, many times & teachers DO monitor the hallways during class transitions. I always see it & do it (when I sub).

KimberlyD 2 years ago

But No, John. The daughter is correct. Don't you know that teens know a lot more than adults do? That's what's wrong with this entire situation...the kids know everything and the parents believe their kids before they do another adult.

Your daughter is correct! My daughter was in the classroom when the beating took place and he didn't even see it coming. No time to proctect himself. The teacher was standing in the hall way and let the one student come into the classroom when he shouldn't have been in that class!!!! AHS is getting worse everyday.

If parents would properly raise their children to not act like neanderthals and hold them accountable for their actions, they would behave correctly. It's the laziness of the parents and the lax atitude of law enforcement which allows this type of behavior to continue. Unfortunately, it's the good kids at this, and all schools, that suffer from this type of behavior. Those kids may get suspended which will only allow them to roam the streets and continue that bad behavior. Bring someone into that school that will control those thugs and let the other kids go to school in peace and safety. Good luck to you all!

It would be nice if parents did their jobs, I agree. But that is unlikely to happen. So short of that we need string leadership to deal with the problems that are likely to happen at our schools. Do we hear about Newton, Eastside, or even Rockdale Co schools in the paper all the time? Same type of kids and parents, but the missing ingredient is leadership at the schools. They don't put up with this nonsense but at Alcovy there appears to be a environment where no one deals firmly with problems. That starts at the top.

This entire school system is a JOKE! AHS is a complete free for all! I know plenty of people who work there and they are tired of the lack of leadership. What has to happen for the BOE to realize Dr. Carpenter is NOT the answer!

I want to THANK THE NEWTON CITIZEN for providing a public place for concerns from those of us who are told not to talk to board members and those of us who are mistreated when we point out concerns to administrators. Thank you for giving us this space to hopefully save our schools.

It's time to DEMAND an end to this nonsense. The school needs new leadership and the superintendent and Board of Ed need to know that we are serious. If they won't do their jobs and stop this nonsense and end the nepotism that is leading to these problems then they need to be out of a job themselves. Contact each one of these individuals and demand a change before someone gets seriously hurt at that school.

I'm worried to death with Mr. Roddenberry retiring from Eastside. I am praying we get a great replacement and they run a tight ship and keep the kids in line. The worst thing that could happen for EHS is to have Dr Carpenter transfer from AHS! Dr. Daria and now Mr. Roddenberry have been able to steer EHS on a good path and I hope we get a good replacement--- we hope the same for AHS in the future!

I know at least two board members who are ready to fix this once and for all.

I knew a kid that beg his parents to home school him becase he got tired of being offered drugs everyday. I thing the board is total lost on how to handle things in the school.

Dear AvidReader, central office leak says the "right" choice for you is not being considered.

Picture this....You are a teacher and you are walking down the hallway. You see lots of female students with very short skirts and low hanging tops and males with their boxers hanging out and pants at their ankles. About every other student is listening to their ipods and texting on their phones. The students are listening so loudly you can hear what they are listening to; so can you imagine the damage being done to their ears? You cant ask them to turn it down or off, without the threat of a verbal assault questioning your authority or a parent potentially coming up to the school saying that you touched them inappropriately. One particular high school's administration decided to allow the students to break the existing district policy on electronics in the school without punishment due to the fact that they could not manage the problem anymore. You continue walking and hear students screaming and cussing at each other, as well as, practically and occasionally literally having sex and making drug deals in the hallways, stairwells, and bathrooms. And all of this is before first period.

horrible place to teach but thank you to the Newton Citizen for allowing us a place to vent hopefully the decision makers will read this and realize it is time to do something it is true violations of district policy like crazy in this school

I really hope that after the Board meeting on Tuesday something is done about this horrible situation going on at AHS for the kids sake. I would also like to see something done about the CONFLICT OF INTEREST DUO. I think that along with the violence that are kids are being subjected to that is another pain in the neck. Whether they think that the parents recognize whats going on here or not, but we do I can assure you.

If you want to make change - get your facts correct (forget about heresy) and go to the open meetings to discuss your concerns. The phone poll won't get a lot done - face to face is always the best way. We did when our children were in school.

Henrycounselor 2 years ago

Dear John sounds like you have an axe to grind but if you look at the GAteacher it surely sounds like she or he is not speaking heresy. The simple fact is that these things keep happening at this school. The paper keeps covering them from tasers last year to food fights in the commons to arrest to drugs to beatings. The public is obviously caring about their schools or they would not take the time to comment thank God the paper lets them do it as many are teachers who don't want to be dragged on the carpet just because they spoke out for safeness

0

John 2 years ago

Sorry no ax to grind with anyone and I do understand the issues in NC schools. All I was simply saying is this is the wrong forum if you are looking for results, in front of the board is the best place. But you must present facts & not that I heard from so & so who heard it from a reliable source.

I would LOVE to see Mr. Perry get on the school board-he knows how to get rid of budget deficits and he is STRONG on school safety and discipline. He would be wonderful person to add to the board.

i think the high school would make a perfect super Ingles or new walmart - i mean if all you do is fight and get stun gunned and arrested then why not at least bring in some sales tax.

0

Yallneedprozac 2 years ago

Why do all the kids in the neighborhood tell me there was ANOTHER arrest at Alcovy High School today March 19th - what is going on people?

0

Tatersalad 2 years ago

Adminstrators need to get with it at this school has gone to complete chaos. I hate when you try to get a point across to someone because apparently there are major problems and no wants to hear it let alone try to fix it. We can talk and argue about this issue all day but until the Admin wants to take care of it I think its time to clean house everyone. Let the problem children go so that our kids can learn in peace. By problem children I mean the ADMIN.
