Local Newton sports briefs

COVINGTON -- The Newton girls tennis team remains perfect after playing its fourth match to go 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Region 2-AAAAA with a pair of 4-1 wins.

The Lady Rams beat Langston Hughes in region play on Tuesday before beating Arabia Mountain on Wednesday.

Newton struggled at singles play but dominated at the doubles action against Langston Hughes. The No. 1 doubles team of Shundra Kelton and Allie Brazelton defeated Katherine Small and Shaquandria Galloway 8-0 to give Newton a 1-0 advantage.

Kelsey Swinson struggled at No. 1 singles against the Panthers' Lacee Peel but pulled out an 8-6 victory. Newton's No. 2 doubles team of Marie Diaz and Briana Cooper won easily 8-1 to clinch the victory for the Rams. Tenia Morgan also won at No. 3 singles, edging Davonne Tillman 9-7.

In the match against Arabia Mountain, Diaz, debuting at No. 3 singles, handled Sydney Lockett 8-1 with Swinson losing her first match of the season after taking a 4-3 lead to Kandler Rhestor. Newton's doubles teams once again proved dominant as Kelton and Brazelton defeated Arabia Mountain's Karissa Ash and Karissa Campbell 8-3. Newton clinched the match as Tenia Morgan and Brishanti Weaver defeated Miranda Johnson and Jahna Gladman 8-2.

According to Newton girls head coach Michael Bryan, the best match of the day was at No. 2 singles. Trinity Kinnon trailed Arabia Mountain's Danielle Richardson 0-3 before storming back to take a lead at 6-5. Kinnon held off a Richardson to claim a 9-7 victory.Eastside boys golf team cruises past Loganville by 27 strokesCOVINGTON -- The Eastside boys golf team beat Loganville by a score of 150-174 to run their record to 3-1 on Wednesday at The Oaks Course.

Leading the way for the Eagles were Quin Murphy with a 2-under par 34 followed by Brandon Shives (37), Matt Mitchell (38) and Jordan Leifels with a 41.

Eastside's next match will be on Tuesday at Monroe Country Club against Monroe Area and Alcovy.
