Pets available for adoption this week in Newton, Rockdale counties

Trixie is waiting patiently for just the right family to come and take her home. She's a 1-year-old Boxer-mix, weighing about 50 pounds and is good with kids. She's housebroken and is already trained to sit, lay down and rollover. She was found as a stray and would make a great family pet. She can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-278-8403. - Staff photo by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

This guy is named Seuss in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday celebrations this month. Found as a stray, he's a shepherd-mix with a touch of Aussie in him. He's only 3 months old and has received his first vaccinations and has been wormed. He's looking to spend the rest of his birthdays with a family that loves him. He can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal. - Staff photo by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
