COVINGTON -- All four of Eastside's boys scorers shot better than Rockdale's low-round shooter while both the Eastside's girls scorers posted scores in the 30s in the sweep of the Bulldogs on Monday at The Oaks Course.
Through six holes, the Eastside girls beat Rockdale by more than 20 strokes, 67-88. The Eastside boys easily handled Rockdale with their 168-209 win as they were able to finish all nine holes before it became too dark for play.
Eastside's Quin Murphy and Brandon Shives were definitely head and shoulders above the rest of the field on the course for the boys as their scorers were in the 30s.
Murphy was the low shooter with a 38 while Shives was one stroke higher. First-year varsity players, Matt and Jack Mitchell, surprised a lot of people with the third- and fourth-lowest scores posting a 45 and a 46.
Helping Matt Mitchell obtain his score was his ability to finish the final two holes par-par.
Playing, but not scoring, for Eastside were Jordan Leifels, who shot a 47, and Dylan Leach, who posted a 50.
"I expected those two to really separate themselves," said Eastside head coach Jay Cawthon of his top two scorers. "But I expect Jordan Leifels to come on since he is a four-year guy for me. I know he will, he's a hard worker.
"Matt Mitchell is really playing really consistent, he's just going to get better -- so is Jack."
Even though the Rockdale boys lost by 41 stokes, Bulldogs head coach David Phenix was still pleased with their performance.
"We dropped nine strokes off of last week (against Newton)," said Phenix. "We scheduled Eastside and they're always good. It gives us a measuring stick as to where we want to be. This, compared to last year, at this time, we're doing considerably better. I think we're moving in the right direction."
Posting the low round for Rockdale was Cameron Rivers, who shot a 48, followed by D.J. Youngblood (52), Kaleb Ponder (53) and Kaleb Ponder (53).
The scores that did not count belonged to Griffin Miller (57) and Blake Baron (64).
On the girls side, Eastside's Emily Almand turned the heat up, shooting a 30 through six holes to lead all players. Also scoring for the Eastside girls was Savannah Upshaw who had a 37. Playing on Eastside's team were Katie Briscoe (49) and Autumn Whiten (52).
Nazzerine Waldon had the low score for the Rockdale girls with a 42 followed by Jasmine Edwards (46) with Savannah Williams and Reneisha Biggs posting a 56.
