Bazzani starts strong for Colonels

Eastern Kentucky's baseball team may be off to a tough start in 2012, but Anthony Bazzani hasn't suffered the same fate.

The former Heritage hurler has made three appearances out of the bullpen for the Colonels and in four innings pitched has allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three. Bazzani, a junior right-hander, picked up his second career save in Eastern Kentucky's 7-6 win in 11 innings over East Tennessee State in the first series of the season.

Meanwhile, Salem star Dustin Dunlop has struggled in the early stages of his senior season. Despite hitting the go-ahead home run in the 11th inning of that win over East Tennessee State, Dunlop is hitting just .192 (5 of 26) in seven games.

Eastern Kentucky (2-5), which has lost four consecutive games, hosts Indiana State for a three-game weekend series, starting today at 2:00 p.m.

Thompson earns all-freshman honor

Bernard Thompson recently polished off a fine first regular season on the Florida Gulf Coast basketball team. Thompson, the former Rockdale standout, finished the 29-game schedule second on the team in scoring (11.9 points), rebounds (5.2) and assists (2.1), while leading the Eagles in steals with 53.

The freshman guard, who helped lead Rockdale to the state championship game a season ago, was named to the conference's all-freshman team and is hitting 45 percent of his field goal attempts (120-of-265) and 38 percent of his 3-point attempts (33 of 85).

Florida Gulf Coast, which slumped down the stretch, losing its final three games to finish the regular season 13-16, claimed the No. 6 seed and opened the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament against No. 3 seed USC Upstate Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at Mercer University.
