Rockdale Post 77 had gone through its first 14 games of the American Legion baseball season unbeaten. But nothing had come quite as easy as victory No. 15. Fred Williams hit a grand slam and a three-run home run, Daniel Jackson added a pair of two-run home runs, part of a seven-home run day as Post 77 trounced Dawsonville Post 247, 32-0 Sunday.
“It was a good day offensively for us, we got to swing the bat, every got at least, looks like seven at bats. It was a good day for us,” said Rockdale coach Jack Murphy. “We’re not that good, they’re not that bad, (but) hitting is contagious. The guy’s got it going.”
Rockdale led 5-0 before opening things up in a marathon fourth inning. Stewart Spence hit a grand slam, Cole Murphy added a solo shot and Williams ripped a three-run home run to cap an 11-run inning and put Post 77 up 16-0.
The visitors added nine runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth as Williams and Robert Bell each launched grand slams, and Jackson hit a two-run blast in each inning.
“Seven home runs and all the walks they gave us, it just snowballed and got out of hand,” Murphy said.
Starter and winning pitcher Matt Anderson (4 IP, 4 K) and Ryan Knight (3 IP, 8 K) were the beneficiary of the offensive barrage. Rockdale stays on the road when it travels to Canton Post 45 today at 6:30 p.m.
“We’re a good team (but) we got a ways to go,” said Murphy.
