CONYERS -- A man who lost control of his car on McDaniel Mill Road in February has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the death of the passenger in the car.
Jesse Scott Curbow, 27, of 137 Crowell Road, Conyers, was charged Friday with failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and homicide by vehicle - first degree.
According to a report by the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, Zachary Ortiz, 26, 1482 Bethany Road, Covington, was killed when Curbow lost control of his Honda Civic on a curve on McDaniel Mill Road, left the roadway, struck a culvert, rolled across a yard and hit a tree. The accident occurred at about 3:45 a.m. on Feb. 18.
Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene. Curbow was taken by air ambulance to an Atlanta area hospital with serious injuries.
The incident report showed that the vehicle was traveling south at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. Ortiz was a passenger in the front seat. Both occupants of the car were wearing seat belts.
