Pets available for adoption this week in Newton, Rockdale counties

There's nothing wrong with this guy that a shave and a haircut won't fix.Though he could do with a little grooming, Joey is still putting his best foot forward in the hopes someone is looking for a friendly and sweet furry buddy. A terrier-mix, he's only 3 years old and weighs a mere 15 pounds. He can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal. -Staff photo by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

This little kitty has had a rough eight weeks of life. She was found by a Good Samaritan who saw that she was playing in the road and had been struck by an automobile. That person took her to a veterinarian for treatment and she is now well on her way to a complete recovery. She's solid gray and is up-to-date on shots and has been dewormed. She will be eligible for adoption Friday and can be rescued at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-278-8403. -Staff photo by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
