COVINGTON -- It's perfect weather for an outdoor movie, and the Montessori School of Covington is hosting a Movie Under the Stars event on Saturday, June 23.
The school will show the 1968 family film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" on a giant screen at the ball field on the school's campus, located in the Clark's Grove neighborhood off Clark Street.
The musical stars Dick Van Dyke as a hapless inventor who creates a flying car, only to have a dictator from a foreign government attempt to steal it.
The event will get under way at 8:15 p.m. with a pre-show including games, hula hoops and music for children. The movie will begin at dark.
Tickets are $7 per person, and after the cost of putting on the event is covered, proceeds will go to a scholarship fund at the Montessori School. Event coordinator Gina Johnson said she hopes at least 200 tickets are sold in order to raise a profit of $1,000, enough to cover one scholarship.
"The school is a small private school and really relies on donations to help the school. As parents we really wanted to help and we thought it would be great to do a movie night and that everybody would enjoy it in the summer," said Johnson, whose business, Multi-Care Holistic Health Center, is sponsoring the event.
Popcorn, cotton candy, nachos and cheese and other concessions will be for sale. Those who attend can also bring in food, and are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
Johnson said "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is a movie kids will enjoy and parents and grandparents remember from their youth with fondness, truly a movie for the whole family.
If the event is a success, Johnson plans to host several more.
