COVINGTON -- Daniel Croom turned some heads in the Georgia Dugout Top-100 Georgia Underclassman Showcase at Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) on Wednesday.

"Some of the coaches told me I did very well out there and they liked me," Croom, a rising junior at Newton High School, said. "They played me in the outfield the whole game, I pitched very well, three-up, three-down. I think they liked me, I really (do)."

Croom was one of 72 high school players participating in the showcase, including 14 from local high schools.

Everyone participated in a pro-style workout in the morning where they were timed in 60-, 40- and 20-yard runs. After a defensive workout, they had batting practice and participated in ball-exit speed drills before breaking into groups where they had simulated games.

"If you're a baseball player you have to do it because there's a lot of competition. It was a great experience, those boys can hit and they'll challenge you out there," Croom said. "But you have to keep working."

The main objective is to make it to the Top-100 from all showcases. Those that made it last year had a chance to compete in front of 150 college and professional scouts. At the GPC showcase there were scouts from Gordon College, GPC as well as pro scouts from the Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta Braves.

Even though participants will find out how they did within the next 48 hours, Croom feels that he did well. But more importantly, he knows where he needs to improve.

"I felt like I did real well. I just have to get out there more and practice more but I think I had a good outing. I was pretty good at pitching, at the plate I was making solid contact but there's always room to improve," Croom said. "I know where I need to be. The speed is what I need to work on. My speed and my takeoff."

There are still a couple more showcases before the Top-100 on June 27-28 at Marietta High School. The showcases will be on Monday at Gordon College and Columbus State and Tuesday at Mill Creek High School. More information and registration can be found at www.georgiadugoutclub.org.

"I'm going to try to get in more showcases throughout the summer," Croom said. "It's fun and I need to get my name out there."
