LITHONIA -- Two of the final seven holes of the 36-hole U.S. Amateur Public Links Qualifying Tournament at Mystery Valley Golf Club was the downfall for Covington's Taylor Smith on Monday.
After shooting an even-par 71 in the first round, Smith tied for the lead at 4-under par by birdieing four holes of the front nine in the second round of the day. However, he ended up bogeying the 12th and 17th hole to drop down to 2-under par as he failed to qualify for one of the top three spots heading to the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship tournament site at Midway, Utah.
Cory Sciupider of Etowah, N.C., took the low medalist spot shooting a 4-under par. Also qualifying for the tournament at 3-under par are Seth Reeves (Duluth) and Sepp Straka (Valdosta).
Waiting in the wings as the alternates are Kyle Cobb of Tallahassee, Fla., who shot a 3-under par but lost in a playoff, and Smith.
The tournament will take place starting on July 9 at Soldier Hollow Golf Course.
