The Heritage baseball team had a successful 2012 season, winning 18 games and reaching the Class AAAA state tournament before losing in two games to South Forsyth. The off-the-field successes are starting to add up as well. Left-handed pitcher Luke Cathcart recently signed a scholarship with Reinhardt College in Waleska, joining infielder Jordan Martin (Georgia Southwestern College) as class of 2012 signees.
"(Cathcart is) always going to go out and compete for you (and) gives you an opportunity for you to go out and win a game. I'm extremely happy for him," said Heritage coach Jason Borcherding. "I think he'll go up (to Reinhardt), he's going to work really hard, he'll go out there and be successful."
Right-handed pitcher Ryan Gasque, who went 7-0 with an 0.84 ERA against Region 8-AAAA foes and joined Cathcart in forming one of the top 1-2 pitching combinations in league, will be a preferred walk-on player at Gordon College.
"We rode Luke, Gasque and (left-hander, Joe) Salvador the entire year," Borcherding said. "Any time you lose those types of guys that's going to hurt you in your rotation."
Cathcart, who was named an all-region second-teamer, will join a Reinhardt team that struggled in 2012, going 22-32 overall and 10-14 Appalachian Athletic Conference play, its third season in the conference.
