CONYERS — Five people — the driver and four passengers — were injured in a one-car accident Friday morning on Interstate 20 westbound between the West Avenue and Sigman Road exits. The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m.
According to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, four people were taken to Atlanta area hospitals by ground ambulance; one was taken by helicopter. The driver of the car was a woman believed to be in her 40s; the other passengers were youngsters ranging in age from about 6 to 17. Although initial reports indicated that two passengers were ejected from the vehicle, later reports could not confirm that, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Preliminary information indicated that the vehicle ran off the road and into an embankment, causing it to overturn.
All lanes of I-20 westbound were closed for about 15 minutes while a helicopter landed to pick up the youngest victim for transport to Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. One other victim was taken to Egleston by ground ambulance; the other three were transported to Grady Hospital by ambulance.
