COVINGTON - Political newcomer Marcus Jordan pulled off an upset win in Tuesday's General Primary, winning the Democratic Primary for Board of Commissioners chairman over incumbent Kathy Morgan.

Jordan, the county's assistant chief appraiser in the Tax Assessors Office, received 53.34 percent of the vote to Morgan's 46.66 percent. A total of 6,314 votes were cast, with Jordan receiving 3,368 and Morgan receiving 2,946.

"I've been under attack for four years. I respect the voters' opinion. The voters have spoken and I'm proud to have served and honored to have served Newton County for four years," Morgan said.

Jordan thanked his supporters "and thanks to God and to Ms. Morgan for a great race." Jordan will face Republican Keith Ellis in November.

The District 1 race was decided in the Republican primary, with John Douglas beating local attorney John Strauss, garnering 59.2 percent of the vote. A total of 3,076 votes were cast in the race with Douglas getting 1,821 and Strauss getting 1,255.

Douglas is a former state representative and state senator and previously served on the Newton County Board of Education. The District 1 seat is being vacated by three-term commissioner Mort Ewing.

Douglas focused his campaign on preserving quality of life and the rural character of District 1.

Turnout was 30.92 percent, with 17,070 ballots cast. There are a total of 55,207 active registered voters in Newton.

I wonder if Mr. Jordan will finally participate in some forums now. Hopefully people will get to see just what kind of damage they've done in choosing this clueless person to go against another clueless person in November. If y'all thought it was bad now, just wait until one of these two gets in there.

Hopefully the next commission chair person will realize how important the Library is and will direct funds to bring back the staff and restart buying new books and magazine subscriptions.

The Library and it's branches are an important part of the educational system for adults and children.

The Library needs to go back to the original hours of operation.

Coming from a conservative- This is not good. She had demostrated to be more conservative than the two left in the race. Your property tax will go up next year. Why would you want to elect someone who is responsible for the tax appraisal mess we have in Newton County? It looks like the non property owners have taken over our county now. It maybe time for true conservatives to move North or East and give up on Newton.
