Parents, students invited to school open houses

COVINGTON -- It may still feel like summer outside, but the first day of school is just around the corner.

Each Newton County school is scheduled to hold an open house next week, and students and especially their parents are invited to attend.

"It's a great opportunity for students to meet their teachers and ease some of the anxiety of the first day of school, especially for the little ones," said Sherri Davis-Viniard, director of Public Relations for the Newton County School System. "Visiting the school prior to the first day is also beneficial for parents, as it gives them the chance to learn the traffic patterns and parking rules ahead of time."

Elementary school open houses are scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 1, middle school open houses are scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 2 and high school open houses are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1.

Davis-Viniard said attendees can ask school officials questions about bus routes and receive school supply lists, among other things.

"The goal is to provide as much information as possible to parents prior to day one," she said. "Parent involvement is crucial to student success and attending your child's Open House is a great way to start the school year."

Newton County students return to school Friday, Aug. 3.

I have made the decision not to sponsor any club at AHS or attend any sporting events until this lawsuit mess is over. Instead I am going to send my donation to a Rockdale county school this year. When this is out of the papers for 365 days in a row I will look at renewing what I was planning to do.

I also plan to vote in the dem primary on Tuesday. Ms. Coggin please let your mother know why she is not getting 3 votes from my house. We always have supported the Morgan Family (Jack Davis Kathy and Abigail)but it has been made clear that the 3rd generation does not care about me. Time for a new family dynasty in this county just speaking from a voter in the 5th district.

@gsm7476 While I respect your right to use your money to support organizations of your choice, may I please point out that not attending sporting events or sponsoring clubs only serves to punish the kids involved. The school does not profit as a whole from ticket or concession sales, but those funds go to help the teams and clubs such as band to furnish/repair/maintain equipment they need to participate in their chosen activity. The children are not responsible for the lawsuit or the fall out from it. They need our support. Thank you.
