COVINGTON -- It may still feel like summer outside, but the first day of school is just around the corner.
Each Newton County school is scheduled to hold an open house next week, and students and especially their parents are invited to attend.
"It's a great opportunity for students to meet their teachers and ease some of the anxiety of the first day of school, especially for the little ones," said Sherri Davis-Viniard, director of Public Relations for the Newton County School System. "Visiting the school prior to the first day is also beneficial for parents, as it gives them the chance to learn the traffic patterns and parking rules ahead of time."
Elementary school open houses are scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 1, middle school open houses are scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 2 and high school open houses are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1.
Davis-Viniard said attendees can ask school officials questions about bus routes and receive school supply lists, among other things.
"The goal is to provide as much information as possible to parents prior to day one," she said. "Parent involvement is crucial to student success and attending your child's Open House is a great way to start the school year."
Newton County students return to school Friday, Aug. 3.
