Newton Fire Service reports house fire on Puppy Chase Saturday

COVINGTON -- A residence at 65 Puppy Chase, located off U.S. Highway 278 near Stanton Springs, burned Saturday night around 9:30 p.m., according to the Newton County Fire Service.

"It was a complete loss. When units arrived, the house was well involved," said Newton County Fire Service Chief Kevin O'Brien. "There was a complete loss of structure and contents."

O'Brien said the dwelling was a frame, two-story and the owner/renter and his daughter were able to escape, but saved only a motorcycle and some puppies. The chief estimated the loss to be in excess of $100,000.

NCFS received assistance from Morgan County and Social Circle fire departments, but O'Brien said there were no hydrants in the area of the fire so it was necessary to shuttle water.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is not believed to have been weather-related.

O'Brien said during Saturday morning storms that passed through the area there were a few downed trees, but "not widespread, nothing major."
