Post 77 sweeps Douglasville 5-3, 4-3

CONYERS -- Rockdale Post 77 mounted two come-from-behind wins to sweep Douglasville 5-3 and 4-3 in Saturday's doubleheader at Hanson-Carr Field.

"We found a way to win and that's the way we've been," Rockdale Post 77 manager Jack Murphy said. "We get behind and fight our way back. We get good pitching at the end and that's what wins it."

In the first game, Douglasville got on the scoreboard first when Rockdale pitcher Matt Anderson walked the batter with bases loaded in the second inning. But Post 77 was able to erase the deficit with a two-run double by Keith Buckhault in the bottom of the third. Rockdale added two runs in the next inning to take a 4-1 lead. The first run came on a Logan Smith hit, with the second occurring when Zack Moates crossed the plate on a Trey Hendrix hit.

After Douglasville scored twice in the top of the fifth to close the gap, Jimmy Sparks added a run on a Cole Murphy double to end the scoring.

Murphy ended the doubleheader going a perfect 5-for-5 in his six at bats. His final trip to the plate resulted in an intentional walk.

"I've been hitting lately," he said. "I just want to get that (championship) ring, baby."

Douglasville's Dalton Schling put Post 145 in the lead with a two-run double in the fourth inning of the second game. Before Rockdale could get the final out, Douglasville extended its advantage to 3-0. In the home half of the inning, Rockdale put itself in a position to get back in the game by loading the bases with no outs. However, the Douglasville defense was able to hold on to the shutout. Despite not scoring, Rockdale pitcher Ryan Knight did not lose confidence in his offense.

"They've been hitting well all season," Knight said. "When we get behind, they don't stop trying. I told them, 'If you give me a lead, I'll win.'"

The Post 77 offense came through for Knight in the fifth inning. Buckhault and Sparks each had a RBI double before Robert Bell came through to tie the game. Rockdale took the lead with a Jake Wright sacrifice fly to plate Cole Murphy.

Rockdale is a perfect 14-0 in district games while being 24-1 overall as Post 77 heads to the state tournament in Loganville on Thursday.
