COVINGTON -- Local golfers played well in the Atlanta Junior Golf tournament at The Oaks Course on Wednesday but they were never able to take the top spot.
Conyers' Alexander Goldman and Joshua Beckman, also from Conyers, had the best finishes, each coming in third place. They each shot a 46 with Goldman playing in the 9-hole Open Boys 12-under and Beckman playing in the 9-hole Club Boys 12-under.
Winning the 9-hole open with an even-par 36 was McDonough's Nathan Sheets. He started the tournament with a birdie on the par-four second hole before dropping back to even with a bogey on the par-three fourth. Marietta's Ethan Gardner won the 9-hole club with a 1-over par 37.
Finishing in sixth place with a 102 in the 18-hole Club Boys 13-14 division was Conyers' John Sauer. Monroe's Luke Peavy won the 18-hole club with an 84.
In the 9-hole Club Girls 7-18 division, Conyers' Lauren Ward was 28 strokes off the pace set by McDonough's Hannah Gasaway. With a round of 66, Ward finished in seventh place while Gasaway won her division with a 2-over par 38.
Eastside golfers Matt Mitchell and Ryan Dial could not find the home-course advantage as they each shot a 95 to finish tied for 13th in the 18-hole Open Boys 15-18 division.
It appeared that Mitchell was ready to turn his game around after making par the first three holes on the second nine. But after having to re-hit his tee shot on the par-three fourth hole, Mitchell was unable to get back on track, shooting bogey or worse in the final six holes. In total, he parred seven holes while shooting bogey in three and double bogey or worse in eight.
Dial, on the other hand, had five pars, six bogeys and seven double bogey or worse.
Winning the 18-hole open boys 15-18 division was Duluth's Matthew Collins, who had a 4-over par 75 from the Championship tees.
Winning the other divisions were Peachtree City's Morgan Kory (18-hole Club Girls 7-18 -- 76), Lawrenceville's Harmanprit Kaur (18-hole Open Girls 7-18 -- 76) and McDonough's Bo Echols (18-hole Club Boys 15-18 -- 78).
