Summer storm leaves some damage

An empty house at the intersection of Hill and Walnut streets was struck by a huge tree which did significant structural damage. Covington Fire Department Capt. Tony Smith said Wednesday city officials were in the process of getting in touch with the homeowner. This house on Stacia Drive off Flat Shoals Road was heavily damaged by fire which erupted around 11 p.m. The cause is undetermined, but it may have been weather-related. Newton County Fire Service was called to the scene, but Smith said there was already heavy flame and smoke showing, according to information dispatched on the radio. The homeowner said friends and neighbors have been of great assistance to the family. Here, an employee of Certified Restoration Dry Cleaning Network exits the burned house with some clothing that will hopefully be salvaged.

Although the rain was welcome and the promised cooler weather is a relief, Tuesday night's stormy weather did leave a few casualties in its wake.
