SOCIAL CIRCLE -- Social Circle Department of Public Safety Director Tom Fox announced Tuesday afternoon that Christine Rahl of Social Circle has been arrested and charged with theft by deception in connection with the theft of more than $1.2 million dollars from Abbey Hospice.
"This was done over a period of several years, from 2008 to the present," Fox said. "According to the investigation, it appears to be approaching around the $1.3 million range. We're now looking into how the money was spent and to see if there's any left. Of course, the investigation is ongoing."
Abbey Hospice is located at 215 Azalea Court in Social Circle. Rahl had been employed for a number of years as an office manager.
Officials with the hospice contacted police on June 25 regarding the missing funds. The Social Circle Department of Public Safety and the Walton County District Attorney's Office began an investigation into the allegations.
"While it appears that she (Rahl) acted alone, the full amount of the theft is not yet known and continues to be investigated," Fox said in a prepared statement.
