CONYERS -- If you are looking for a job or need more training to switch careers, you can get more information at a special expo this week.
Georgia Piedmont Technical College and the Rockdale County government are sponsoring a Career & Education Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Salem High School, which is located at 3551 Underwood Road in Conyers.
The free expo will include at least 30 vendors, including academic programs at GPTC, representatives from the Georgia Department of Labor, military recruiters, area businesses and other social services programs.
"So many people who are underemployed are looking to improve their skills or some are recently displaced (from their jobs)," said Tonya Parker, director of Community Affairs and Innovative Programs for Rockdale County. "We want to provide resources and information that's free."
The event is geared toward helping individuals change careers, get training and research going back to college and also will aid high school students who want more information about earning college credit through dual enrollment programs and others looking for careers.
Dianne Rackley, recruiter admissions specialist at GPTC, said anyone could benefit from attending.
She encourages guests to bring copies of their resumes and dress professionally.
"Prepare to spend some time there," Parker said. "Don't just spend 10 or 15 minutes there. Make an effort to visit as many booths as possible. Really invest time in that day."
Parker also suggested bringing a photo ID, Social Security card and tax records for financial aid assistance, as financial aid specialists will be onsite to answer questions.
The event also will feature giveaways and prizes.
