16-year school board veteran vies for seat

COVINGTON -- A longtime school board member hopes to keep his seat after this year's election.

Almond Turner, 61, who also is assistant police chief for the city of Covington Police Department, is running as a Democrat for the District 4 seat on the Newton County Board of Education, a seat he's held for the past 16 years.

"I've never become complacent," he said. "I'm always looking for better ways of doing things -- that's how we grow, and the community has changed over the years."

If reelected, Turner wants to focus on getting more parents involved in education and focusing on good things like the Newton College & Career Academy, which helps to better educate more students.

"I care about all children," he said. "We have to accept them all and that they all have different needs."

He said that over the years, he's developed a relationship with the community and he's seen as responsible, accountable and committed to making sure all students get a quality education.

"I think I bring to the board a level-headedness to be able to discuss issues, and once a decision is made, support it," he said.

Turner said he brings to the table skills like budgeting and policy making and implementation. He has served a chairman of the school board for four one-year terms and as vice chairman the same.

While on the board, Turner was appointed to serve on the Georgia School Boards Association's governmental operations committee and the Federal Relation Network.

He is a lifelong resident of Newton County and began his law enforcement career as an officer with CPD in 1972. He's worked as a crime prevention officer, a lieutenant, in the criminal investigative division and as captain; he's been assistant chief of police since December 1997.

He attended Fort Valley State College as a music major and received an associate's degree in criminal justice from DeKalb Community College and a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from Troy University.

He's also a member of the Newton County Community Band and serves on the boards of the Newton County YMCA, the Newton County Community Partnership and the Newton County Leadership Collaborative.

At the Salem overlay meeting they had comments of what was good and what was bad in the area. The comment of good was we had great School Buildings. The Bad Comment was that the school system has a poor performance record. 16 years is enough it is time for a change in direction. Newton County can not move forward without good schools if we keep down the same path expect the same results. Our Children deserve better.

I almost had to laugh when I read this article. Evidently Turner has not been keeping up with the issues in NCSS lately.

If this guy is going to ask us for his vote then he needs to answer the questions we ask him.  Why after 16 years is the NCSS graduation rate below the state average.  He likes to argue that the 64% number is wrong but he is wrong.  It is in plain view at the DOE site.  Whether he likes it or not it is below the state average.

John you are correct.  I have done copies and paste more than once myself especially on some of those school articles that are well written and it pointed the finger at the wrong dude HAHAHAH.

We cannot afford 16 more years of  Almond Turner.  Two thirds of our high schools are BELOW the state avg grad rate and the majority except for Eastside are not eligible for hOPE when they graduate and based on my opinion he always talks EHS down.

BASED ON INFORMATION AND BELIEF Almond Turner voted NO on Sam Fuhrey at the bidding of Dennis Carpenter.  In our opinion if you want Dennis and LaQuanda Carpenter to run even wilder then vote  Turner.   If you do not then vote against Turner.

Darn I never thought of that... copy and paste, copy and paste. John you are correct. I have done copies and paste more than once myself especially on some of those school articles that are well written and it pointed the finger at the wrong dude HAHAHAH. See anyone can do it

If it is there call Kathy Morgan and have it removed. You can not put signs in the right of way or on public land. If it is in the right of way call the DOT

one question almond do you know how to manage your way out of a wet paper sack?

He is part of the majority board that believes in spending all the taxpayer money he can get within the law. Maxed out millage rate and now going for maxed out bond by spending 20 million bond on the new school. They are already looking at extending SPLOST in 2015 to cover the bond. I ask you, has all this money led to one of the top school systems in the state? I think not. I believe if they spent LESS we would have a better school system because they would have to manage and plan better. Which would mean they would have to KNOW what is going on in the schools. The other candidate at least has walked the district and understands that problems exists in the schools.

TUrner says "I care about all children," he said. "We have to accept them all and that they all have different needs."   Yeah unless they are Eastside Eagles or theme school kids.   GO AWAY AFTER ALL THIS TIME and thanks for the high millage rate and worthless votes and conniving with Dennis Carpenter

Hey that's ok. My Eagle passed all of her EOCTs with 95% or higher. Chew on THAT.

Alcovy High kids are NOT learning math and these are last year scores and we hear 2012 is worse.  Help us now get this school under control.  RED  = FAILURE.  61% failure on Math II unreal.

Questions for the 16 year veteran?  How is it that you have been in office 16 years and allowed graduation rates to be at 64%?  How close are you to Dennis Carpenter?  How much did you spend in Washington DC in 2012 and in Savannah in 2012?  What do we have to show for it?  Is it true that you termed the theme school "elitist" to use the words of some?  Have you ever walked into it during school hours to see what the students look like?  Why is every county around Newton higher in grad rates, HOPE eligible students, EOCT scores in Math and CRCT scores than Newton?  Sounds like you need to retire and go away.  You had your 16 years.
