COVINGTON -- County Commissioner Lanier Sims is hosting a meet and greet for the public to meet the candidates vying to represent Newton County.
Sims, who is not up for reelection, is hosting the event from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 15 at Prospect United Methodist Church, located at 6752 Ga. Highway 212. Candidates from congressional, state and local races have been invited to attend. Each candidate will have five minutes to speak. There will not be a question and answer session. Following the meet and greet, refreshments will be served and those in attendance will have the chance to speak one on one with candidates.
Sims said he decided to host the forum because "every district in the county touches District 2."
"The majority of the population in the western and southwestern side of the county never get to candidates' forums, so what I decided to do was bring the candidates to them, or at least closer to them ... I just want the citizens, regardless of party affiliation, to be informed and to get out and vote," he said.
