CONYERS -- The second suspect in two June armed robberies is in custody at the Rockdale County Jail.
Conyers Police Department Lt. Jackie Dunn said Derek Quantrell Cummings, 19, 1133 Railroad St., Conyers, turned himself in to police Monday afternoon. He was accompanied by his attorney.
Cummings is charged in connection with the CPD investigation of an armed robbery at the Subway restaurant on Sigman Road on June 8. In addition, he faces a second armed robbery charge by the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office in connection with a June 11 incident at Elliott's Grocery at the corner of Sigman and Rockbridge Roads.
Cummings and his alleged accomplice in the Subway robbery, Antwain Boglin, 20, of 1159 Millcrest Walk, were arrested on unrelated drug charges on June 9. According to Dunn, on the evening following the Friday night Subway robbery, Boglin and Cummings were sitting on Cummings' front porch on Railroad Street smoking marijuana.
Dunn said a CPD officer was getting gas at the city gas pumps on Railroad Street, smelled the odor of burning marijuana, and began looking for the source.
Cummings and Boglin were arrested on a marijuana charge and taken to the Rockdale County Jail. Cummings was able to bond out before authorities connected him to the Subway robbery and had been on the lam until he turned himself in Monday.
A third suspect may also have been involved in the Subway robbery, according to Dunn.
Cummings and another man are also suspected in the June 11 Elliott's Grocery robbery. According to RCSO Investigator Michael Camp, a warrant has been issued for the second suspect in that incident, but the Sheriff's Office has not released his name.
Dunn said the city's investigation into the Subway robbery is ongoing and gun charges may be filed against Cummings.
