Muriel Groggel King, 87, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went home to the Lord on January 20, 2012. Muriel was born July 6, 1924 in Manassas, GA to Gordon Kicklighter and Mabel Wells Kicklighter. Despite growing up during the Depression in Atlanta and rural South Georgia, she shared a happy childhood with her sisters Juanita (Kicklighter) Jones and Dorothy (Kicklighter) Thrower. She met the love of her life, Dwight K. Groggel, Sr, in Charleston, SC. They were married in 1944 and raised two children, Dwight Jr. and Barbara (Groggel) Sypher. Dwight Sr. died in 1976. Muriel later married Jeff King of North Charleston, SC, a union that did not last. She subsequently spent several happy years in Anniston, AL near her daughter Barbara and son-in-law Rhett Sypher. She went on to live for many years with her sister, Juanita, in Conyers, GA. The last two years of her life she lived in Summerville, SC, the last year with her son Dwight Jr. and his wife Linda (Riser) Groggel. For almost 20 years Muriel worked at Sears Roebuck in Charleston and Atlanta, retiring as a department manager. A dedicated Christian, she was an active member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Charleston, First Presbyterian Church of Anniston, and later at Smyrna Presbyterian Church in Conyers. Muriel was a dedicated wife, mother, and sister. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her younger sister Dorothy. Muriel is survived by her 2 children and their spouses, her loving sister Juanita, grandchildren Scott Groggel, Emily (Groggel) Shepherd, Allison (Sypher) Rose, and Rhett Sypher Jr. as well as 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on February 4 at Smyrna Presbyterian Church in Conyers, GA.
