COVINGTON -- A double-double by Eastside's Alexia Somerset helped Eastside overcome some of their shortcomings to get an important Region 4-AAA win beating Henry County 59-41 on Tuesday.
Somerset led all scorers with 26 points while bringing down 13 boards.
Also making an impact on the game was Jazzmine Cook who had 14 points in her return game as a starter following a severe knee injury.
"We've been harping on her shooting the ball," said Eastside head coach Matthew Jackson of Somerset. "She's been hiding I think because being in a position where she was with four seniors, she didn't have a lot of pressure. But now the pressure is on because all eyes are on her and she's never been put in that role."
Even though Somerset had 13 rebounds, getting the ball on missed shots is still a problem as the Lady Eagles were outrebounded by Henry County 15 times giving the Lady Hawks a lot of second and third looks. Despite having more shots, Eastside's defense was able to prevent the Lady Hawks from truly taking advantage of those opportunities with they high-pressure defense.
"I was real proud of the way we played defense. We rebounded better this game than we did the last game. Even though we don't rebound well, we have to make sure we convert and limit our turnovers," said Jackson.
The Lady Eagles made the most of the times they had the ball only turning it over six times.
After a slow start to start the first period, Eastside scored while limiting Henry County's offensive output.
The Lady Eagles had a one point lead, 12-11, to end the opening frame before going on a 12-3 run to start the second quarter. The Lady Eagles started the second half just as strong going on a 12-0 run to take a 43-26 lead before the Lady Hawks broke the run with 3:40 left to make it 43-28 on their way to a 47-31 lead entering the final period.
"We wanted to come out strong. It doesn't matter what the score is, we know everybody is going to go on a run. I wanted us to go out there and finish strong and make sure when teams come out strong we match that intensity," said Jackson. " JC (Cook) was inserted into the starting lineup after her knee injury. It was time to get to work and she didn't disappoint. It's about getting that continuity. Alexis Stokes, this was her first time starting this year."
