COVINGTON -- Danyel Fourney scored 24 points and Precious Price added 16 as the Newton girl's basketball team upset Class AAAA No. 3 Alcovy, 79-69 Saturday in Covington.
Newton led 43-37 at halftime, but started the third quarter strong as the lead ballooned to as much as 17 points on a field goal by Jasmine LaGuins at the 1:56 mark. Alcovy, which had its six-game wining streak snapped, got as close as nine points on several occasions, the last coming on a bucket by Meagan Tucker (team-high 22 points), but couldn't get any closer.
Newton's defense forced 13 first-half turnovers and took a six-point lead into the locker room. Alcovy tied the game at 25-25 on a bucket by Lakeiyah Sorrells before the visiting Rams scored seven of the next 10 points, the last of which came on a long 3-pointer from Price at the five-minute mark of the second quarter. Alcovy got to within 32-31, but Newton had an excellent final four minutes as Price fed both Fourney for two of the senior forward's 15 first-half points and Mikola Burks for a 3-pointer, and Tai Avery added a pair of field goals, the last coming at the halftime buzzer to put the Rams up 43-37.
Avery added 12 points and Burks, 11 for Newton. Ashley Williams chipped in with 18 points for the Tigers, though just five came in the second half.
