1 dies in plane crash at Jackson County airport

JEFFERSON, Ga. (AP) — A man was killed when his single engine airplane crashed at the end of a runway at the Jackson County airport.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/zj8OY2) on Sunday that the man was having engine trouble at about 500 feet above ground. Steve Nichols, the county's emergency services director, told the newspaper a maintenance worker heard the plane sputter and then heard a loud noise.

Nichols said the maintenance worker had seen the pilot work on "experimental" aircraft earlier that morning and that he was practicing takeoffs and landings.

The pilot was not immediately identified. Federal regulators planned to investigate.
