The Guard Blu-ray (R)
Movie: 3 stars out of 4
Disc: 4 stars out of 4Quentin Tarantino meets early Guy Ritchie in this black comedy thriller that is among the finest 2011 had to offer. Taking a cue from his brother Martin ("In Bruges"), rookie director John Michael McDonagh concocts a beautifully brief (96 minute) crime caper that pits a functionally dysfunctional Irish beat cop (Brendan Gleeson) and a by-the-book American DEA officer (Don Cheadle) against each other as they work together -- quite inharmoniously -- to solve a grisly murder and foil an impending drug deal. Dry, irreverent and acid-tongued, "The Guard" would be perfect if not for an open-ended final scene that robs it -- and us -- of closure.
