Opponents of immigration bill rally at Ga. Capitol

ATLANTA (AP) — A few dozen people opposing legislation that would bar illegal immigrants from state colleges, universities and technical schools rallied at the Capitol.

The rally Tuesday came just days after Senators passed the bill out of committee. It now goes to the full Senate for a vote.

Supporters of the bill said it's necessary to preserve state-funded education for citizens and legal residents. Opponents said the bill unfairly denies motivated students the opportunity to further their education.

Illegal immigrants are already barred from the state's most competitive schools, including the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech, but may still be admitted to any other state college or university, provided that they pay out-of-state tuition.
