CARTERSVILLE -- The Rockdale boys basketball team got two pieces of good news last Saturday.
First, the No. 3 seed Bulldogs went on the road to Cartersville and knocked off No. 2 seed Woodland 77-73 in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. Then, shortly after the victory, Rockdale learned it would be back home for round two.
While Region 8-AAAA player of the year C.J. Wilson was scoring 23 points and Darious Mitchell and LaRonta Parks were adding 20 points each in the Bulldogs' road win, Marist, the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAAA, was upsetting Region 5-AAAA champion Lithia Springs 55-39. That allows Rockdale, the state runner-up a year ago, to host a sweet 16 game for the third consecutive season.
"We didn't play our best basketball game, but we got a 'W' when we needed it," Rockdale coach Alvin Williams said.
Rockdale and Marist will play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Conyers.
