Neighbor aids in theft suspect's arrest

CONYERS -- A watchful neighbor who reported someone trying to steal an air conditioning unit helped the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office apprehend the suspect.

A deputy responded to Underwood Drive Saturday afternoon where a neighbor had reported seeing a man in the process of stealing an air conditioning unit outside of a house. The neighbor gave a description of the suspect, but said the man had run down Underwood Drive in the direction of Underwood Road.

The deputy began patrolling the area and saw a suspect matching the description running down the street near the baseball fields at Salem High School.

The deputy detained the suspect, who said that he had been given permission by a man named Carlos to take the air conditioner. He admitted that Carlos was not the homeowner.

The neighbor identified the suspect and he was arrested. The RCSO charged Thomas Matthew Brown, 28, of 3449 Salem Mill Trace, with criminal attempt to commit a felony, criminal trespass and possession of tools for commission of a crime.

In other news, an Atlanta man faces a drug distribution charge after a deputy made a traffic stop early Sunday on Ga. Highway 138.

According to the incident report, a deputy pulled over a vehicle after noticing that the tag light was not working. While talking to the occupants of the car, the deputy noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The deputy had all the occupants of the car get out, and he asked them if anyone had marijuana on them. They all denied having the drug and agreed to be searched. The officer found a small clear plastic bag containing suspected marijuana in the pants pocket of Jarmani Wilson Conway, 18, of 445 Standing Rock Drive, Atlanta.

Prior to transporting Conway to the jail, the deputy told him that if he had more marijuana on his person, there would be a new charge at the jail. The suspect reportedly admitted that he had more drugs in the back of his pants inside his underwear.

Found on Conway was a Ziplock bag containing about 14 smaller bags of marijuana, according to the incident report. Conway was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
