Conyers The Heritage soccer teams swept a pair of games from rival Rockdale Friday at Reid Stadium.
In the nightcap, Rockdale jumped on top with a goal in the first minute of the game, but the Heritage defense tightened up , holding the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the visitors went to work on offense, tying the game eight minutes in as Harrison Kulp found Jeffrey Lawson for a goal. Fifteen minutes later, Gustavo Martinez scored to give the Patriots the lead for good, and Martinez fed Mauricio Reyes for a goal late in the second half.
“We settled down, got our chances and finished a couple,” said Heritage coach Brandon Stewart, whose team picked up its first win and improved to 1-2-1 and 1-0 in Region 8-AAAA. “I’m proud of our come back.”
Heritage had no trouble in the girl’s game, cruising to an 8-0 victory. The Patriots, who remained un-scored upon and unbeaten at 4-0, got goals from Haley Elliot (first varsity goal) and Ray Brown less than two minutes into the game to go up 2-0.
Courtney Hodges, who assisted on Elliot’s goal, Laura Zawadzki, Kaley Wells (first varsity goal), Kourtney Kelley and Maria Harding each added first-half goals as Heritage led 7-0 at halftime. In the second half, Elliot fed Harding, who was playing for the first time since injuring a toe, for her second goal to make it an 8-0 game.
“Proud to see my girls show up with a business type approach tonight,” said Heritage coach Chad Suddeth. “The last couple of games we have been settling for the temptation to play very direct. I’m very glad to see us get back to our style of play and connect some great combinations tonight.”
