Former Rockdale ace Buck Farmer got his junior season off to a fine start last weekend.
The Georgia Tech junior, who was a Louisville Slugger pre-season All America third-team selection, tossed six innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out nine in the Yellow Jackets' 5-0 loss to Kent State in the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Classic in Rock Hill, S.C.
The strikeout total matched a career-high for Farmer, who is coming off a stellar sophomore season in which he went 11-3 with a 2.82 ERA.
Former Salem standout Jake Dyer got the start for Georgia State in the Panthers' season opener this past weekend. Dyer, a senior and preseason All America selection by collegebaseballinsider.com, pitched four innings and allowed four earned runs, striking out six in a 7-5 loss to Western Illinois.
Drew Ellwanger sets record at CCSA Championships
ATHENS -- Former Eastside swimmer Drew Ellwanger, a junior at Gardner-Webb, set a team record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.51 seconds on Friday at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium, winning the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association title.
Ellwanger will participate at a Olympic Trial qualifying meet in Virginia next weekend.
