CONYERS -- A Covington man was killed early Saturday morning when the car in which he was a passenger left the roadway and hit a tree.
According to a report by the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, Zachary Ortiz, 26, 1482 Bethany Road, was killed when the driver of the Honda Civic lost control on a curve on McDaniel Mill Road, left the roadway, struck a culvert, rolled across a yard and hit a tree. The accident occurred at about 3:45 a.m.
Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, a 27-year-old Conyers man, was taken by air ambulance to an Atlanta area hospital with serious injuries.
The incident report showed that the vehicle was traveling south at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. Ortiz was a passenger in the front seat. Both occupants of the car were wearing seat belts.
