DULUTH - Five wrestlers from Rockdale and Newton counties will wrestle for a state championship Saturday. Alonzo Allen and Jose Robledo of Rockdale, Boyce Cornwell of Heritage, Eastside's Tyler Bailey and Kenneth Queh of Alcovy all won semi final matches at the State Traditional Tournament, Friday.
The finals will begin at 4:00 p.m at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Allen, a runner-up last season, remained unbeaten at 43-0 in reaching the finals again. The sophomore won a 14-8 decision over Jordan Pitt of Chattahoochee in the 106-pound semi finals and will wrestle Woodland's Chad Hawkins in the title match. Robledo, who placed third a year ago, pinned Effingham County's Andrew Bushey in 4:24 in the 145-pound semi finals and will grapple with Coleman Cunningham of Habersham Central for the championship. Cornwell, who is committed to Gardner Webb, had two first-period pins before outlasting Kell's Chris Gaines, 6-5 in the 195-pound semis and will wrestle Marist's Kenneth Brinson in the finals.
Queh knocked off Jonesboro's Scott Coleman, 11-6 in the 126-pound semi finals and will take on Loganville's Will Hale in the title match.
Bailey will try to win his second consecutive state championship when he wrestles Immanuel Henderson of Rutland in the 113-pound finals in Class AAA.
