Eastside girls, Newton boys win over counterparts in soccer debut

COVINGTON -- The Eastside girls soccer team got off to a good start toward keeping the county championship for the fifth straight year with a 7-0 victory over the Lady Rams on Tuesday, while the Newton boys won their first game against the Eagles since 2008 with a 4-2 decision.

Although the Newton girls came out attacking early and often, Eastside's Amber Lafond scored the game's first goal at the 25:50 mark of the first half on a header off a Kari Dylong corner kick.

The Lady Rams managed to keep up with the Lady Eagles until the seven-minute mark when Sarah Gaddis stretched the Eastside lead to 2-0 on a goal off a Becka McKelvey throw-in.

The lead increased to 3-0 as Lafond scored her second goal off an assist from Tara Harrison. Newton was only able to fire two shots on goal in the first half, one that came off the side post and another saved by keeper Carly Farrow.

Early in the second frame, Lafond completed her hat trick with a header off a corner kick, delivered by Harrison. With just under 30 minutes left, Lafond sent a long ball to Gaddis who scored her second goal to make it 5-0.

Alex Morvik added her name to the score sheet when Harrison sent a throw-in to Gaddis who put the ball in the air to Morvik on the far post. Emily Carroll added the final goal with 2:08 remaining. Newton almost prevented the shutout when their only second-half shot hit off the crossbar in the final seconds.

In the boys game, Justin Ferguson, Khari Mullins, Jean Frimpong and Alexis Lacierva scored for the Rams while keeper Rudolpho Michaca notched 13 saves. Eastside goals were credited to Trent Taylor and Wesley Chambers. The game marked the coaching debut at Eastside of former Eagle soccer star Champ Young.
