FAYETTEVILLE -- It wasn't having four players in double-figures scoring that made a difference for the Alcovy boys in their opening round of the Region 3-AAAA basketball playoffs. It was their defense that proved to be the difference in their 63-37 win over Whitewater at Fayette County on Tuesday.
The Tigers held Whitewater to seven points in the first half, allowing Alcovy to take it easy in the second half after taking a 30-point halftime lead.
"We really tightened down on the defense in the first half. A couple of those points were dunks," Alcovy head coach Eugene Brown said. "We really set the tempo with our defense and we kind of cruised in the second half. We played pretty even in the second half."
Deondre Butler led Alcovy's scorers with 16 points, followed by Devon Edwards' 13. Michael Tucker and Derrius Mathis each had 11 points.
The Tigers will be back on the court on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Dutchtown in the semifinals round.
In their previous two meetings during regular-season play, Alcovy swept the Bulldogs 85-58 and 71-68.
