The students celebrated with a special Q and U wedding cake, made by paraprofessional Betty Blackwell and her husband Clayton. Brown and Blackwell taught together at Porterdale Elementary School and brought their popular Q and U wedding to Live Oak Elementary when it opened in 2009.

Our tax money paid for this??? Couldn't it have gone for something educational for the kids instead of a mock wedding??

No tax money was spent on this mock wedding. As the teacher, I paid for everything out of my own pocket and have for several years now. My para bought all the ingredients, as she has done in the past, for the cake and made and decorated it herself.

The Q and U wedding was part of our activities for learning about the letter Q and the fact that it has no sound of its own. It needs U to complete its sound. The "ceremony" was a lesson about words that have Q and U in them. It is a fun way for the children to remember this concept.

jibbud, keep up the good work. Its not good that you had to pay for this out of your pocket but that show your dedication. Kids need to be taught what a true wedding and commitment is and how they must live up to their commitment. I know several teachers and they all have to pay for supplies as you did and I thank you for that. Its not right to have so many people take advantage of our welfare system when that money could be used for childrens education.

Why didnt they run an article about this to explain what was happening instead of just printing a photo? Maybe that would have avoided some of this confusion.
