PORTERDALE -- The City Council last week gave final approval to an ordinance that prohibits the sale of any drug-related items and drug paraphernalia at licensed businesses in the city.
Businesses in Porterdale that already have the prohibited items in stock will have three months from the effective date of Monday, Feb. 6, to sell or dispose of the items. Businesses are prohibited from acquiring any new stock of items regulated by the ordinance.
Violation of the ordinance could lead to suspension or revocation of a business's license to operate within the city limits.
Prohibited items under the ordinance include various types of pipes used to smoke marijuana or other controlled substance; roach clips, miniature cocaine spoons, bongs, air-driven pipes, ice pipes and chillers.
In other business, Mayor Arline Chapman announced that she is working with the state Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division, to possibly acquire a historic marker to place at the school on Ga. Highway 81 that was originally built for Porterdale's black residents. The historic building is now being used as a church, she said.
"Porterdale is long overdue, I think, for this kind of recognition," Chapman said.
The brass markers provided by the state cost between $4,000 and $5,000, according to City Manager Bob Thomson. There is a requirement for a matching portion of the funds to be provided by the city.
